#9 Blue Jays Roll Over Washington and Jefferson, 10-0

Monterrosa Earns Win With Six Two Hit Innings

  • Score: #9 Johns Hopkins- 10, Washington & Jefferson 0
  • Records: JHU (15-2), W&J (9-5)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Charlie Monterrosa (2-0), L: Alex Tomsic (0-1)
  • The Short Story: Six strong innings from freshman Charlie Monterrosa mixed with another impressive showing from Johns Hopkins hitters led to a comfortable 10-0 win, in seven innings, over Washington & Jefferson.

How it Happened

  • The Blue Jays started with a two run first inning after loading the bases with nobody out. Shawn Steuerer grounded into a double play to bring in Tripp Myers, followed by an Alex Shane infield single to second base to score Matthew Cooper.
  • The lead would be extended for JHU in the next inning, bringing in three runs on three hits. Steuerer, Caleb Cyr and Dylan Whitney all picked up RBI's to give the Blue Jays a comfortable 5-0 lead.
  • In the fifth inning, after Steuerer brought in Dillon Souvignier on an RBI double, Jimmy Stevens came up with two runners on and a chance to break the game wide open. Stevens smacked a ball into the left center field gap to bring two more runs across the plate. Stevens has had multiple RBI's in six games now this season.
  • Charlie Monterrosa kept W&J hitters off balance throughout the entire game, pitching six shut out innings and only allowing two hits, which both were singles. Monterrosa punched out five in the outing without allowing a single free pass throughout his start.
  • JHU placed two more runs on the board in the top of the sixth after three straight hits from Souvignier, Steuerer and Shane to get to a 10 run lead.
  • Jack McRae shut things down in the seventh, setting the Presidents down in order, with two strikeouts, to close out a 10-0 seven run win for the Blue Jays to move to 15-2 on the season.

Inside the Box Score

  • Jimmy Stevens knocked in two more runs today to bring his team leading RBI total to 18. Stevens now has at least one RBI in seven of his last 10 games.
  • Monterrosa now has two starts where he has pitched five or more shut out innings to earn a win. Monterrosa has pitched to a 2.76 ERA through 16.1 innings so far this season.
  • Two hits is the fewest allowed by the Blue Jays staff so far this season. The next closest was when JHU held Roanoke to four back on March 8th, which was also a Charlie Monterrosa start.
