CLAREMONT, CA – The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team fell to fifth-ranked Tufts, 6-3, on Monday afternoon. The Blue Jays' season-opening win streak is snapped as they fall to 6-1 overall. The Jumbos remain unbeaten with a 4-0 record.
The Jumbos took an early 2-1 lead in the match with wins at first and second doubles. In match-up of top-three doubles teams, it was Tufts' Derin Acaroglu and Vuk Vuksanovic that prevailed, 8-5, over juniors
James and
Thomas Yu. Josh Belandres and Rishabh Sharda then beat graduate students
Joe DeMarco and
George Jiang 8-6 at second. Graduate students
Mason Liu and
Jonathan Zhang got one back for the Blue Jays with an 8-6 win over Alex Ganchev and Jack Moldenhauer at third.
Javier Gonzalez put Tufts up 3-1 when he beat DeMarco 6-4, 6-2 at fifth singles. Ganchev followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Liu at third. Acaroglu then clinched the win for the Jumbos with a 6-4, 6-1 win at fourth over
James Yu.
Thomas Yu rallied to defeat Sharrda 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) at first to make it 5-2. Zhang then defeated Vuksanovic 6-4, 7-6 (5) at second to pull the Blue Jays back within two. Belandres closed out the match with a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4) win at sixth over junior
Daniel Ardila.
Hopkins is scheduled to take on 12
th-ranked Bowdoin on Tuesday, March 21 in Orange, CA.
