Johns Hopkins Falls to Second-Ranked Northwestern

BALTIMORE, MD – Second-ranked Northwestern used a nine-goal run to break open a two-goal game as the visiting Wildcats went on to beat host Johns Hopkins, 19-5, Thursday afternoon in Big Ten action. The Blue Jays fall to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten, while the Wildcats improve to 9-1 and 2-0 in the league.

Northwestern jumped out to a two-goal lead with goals from Samantha Smith and Izzy Scane in the opening five minutes. Hopkins got on the board at the 9:45-mark when Ava Angello found Campbell Case cutting in the arc. Case turned and dropped her stick, beating Molly Laliberty from in-tight. Hailey Rhatigan answered with a free position goal just 32 seconds later and it was 3-1 Wildcats.

The Blue Jays cut it back to one less than three minutes later. Case, from goal line extended, fed a pass to a cutting Marielle McAteer, who scored on the run. Northwestern responded with back-to-back goals in a 36-second span to push its lead to 5-2 with 4:04 to go in the quarter. But another Case goal, off an Annie Marshall assist, pulled Hopkins back within two.

Rhatigan then scored with 1:34 to play in the first to spark that nine-goal run. Four Wildcats combined for the nine goals, led by Scane and Erin Coykendall with three apiece. Maeve Barker ended the run when she took a pass from Charlotte Smith at goal line extended and scored from a tough angle at 4:21 in the third. Three minutes later, McAteer scored on a quick-stick on the doorstep off the feed from Angello and it was 14-5. Northwestern would score the final five goals of the game to take the 19-5 win.

Case led the Blue Jays with three points (2g, 1a) while McAteer turned in her first career multi-goal game. Angello finished with the two assists and four draw controls. Hannah Johnson and Jordan Carr each tied their career-high with two caused turnovers.

Coykendall finished with a game-high five goals and seven points, while Scane and Rhatigan added four goals each. Madison Taylor added three goals and assist while Smith controlled a game-high seven draws. Samantha White had five takeaways for the Wildcats.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, March 29 as the Blue Jays host sixth-ranked Stony Brook. Opening draw for the non-conference contest is slated for 4:00 pm.
