PASADENA, CA – The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team wrapped up its Spring Break trip to California with a pair of wins Friday. Junior
Thomas Yu earned his 100
th career win in the second match of the day.
Hopkins opened the day with a 7-2 win at 15
th-ranked Caltech. The Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and then won four of the six singles to take the win.
Thomas and
James Yu gave the Blue Jays an early 1-0 lead with an 8-4 win over Ishaan Kannan and Andrew Zabelo at first doubles.
Joe DeMarco and
George Jiang then beat Nathan Zou and Victor Li 8-5 at third.
Mason Liu and
Jonathan Zhang completed the doubles' sweep with an 8-7 (6) victory at second over Kyle McCandless and Daniel Wen.
Andrew Tran pushed Hopkins' lead to 4-0 when he beat Zou 6-4, 6-3 at sixth singles.
Thomas Yu then clinched the victory with a 6-2, 6-2 at first over McCandless.
Daniel Ardila followed with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Wen at fourth.
Pranav Gadiraju made it a 7-0 Blue Jay lead with a 7-6 (1), 6-3 win at fifth over Li. The Beavers prevented the shutout with a pair of three-set wins at second and third singles. Zabelo defeated DeMarco 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (2) at third and Kannan closed out the match with a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (4) win at second over
James Yu.
JHU then took on Whittier in the final match of its trip. The Blue Jays dropped just one set en route to a 9-0 win over the Poets. Ardila and
Thomas Yu lost just one game versus Spencer Cinco and Mason Lebby in their win at first doubles.
Marco Azar and
Allen Gong then defeated Ahmed Amer and Kieran Carroll, 8-4, at third. DeMarco and Jiang closed out doubles when they beat Luca De Bona and Prayag Ahire, 8-3, at second.
Gong dropped just one game as he beat De Bona at fourth singles to stake Hopkins to a 4-0 lead. Azar clinched the victory when he beat Luuk van den Hoek 6-3, 6-3 at fifth. Jiang followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at sixth over Amer. Tran pushed the Blue Jays' lead to 6-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Carroll at third.
Thomas Yu then reached the century mark with his 6-0, 6-4 defeat of Ahire at first. Ardila wrapped up the match as he came from behind to beat Cinco 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7) at second.
Hopkins (9-2) returns to action on Wednesday, March 29 as the Blue Jays host Gettysburg. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
Notes:
Thomas Yu is the fastest player in program history to reach 100 wins as he needed just 124 matches to do so. Jacob Barnaby '12 had held the mark with 100 wins in 125 matches.
Thomas Yu is now 50-12 in singles and 50-12 in doubles in his career. He ranks 12
th in career singles wins, tied for 17
th in doubles wins and tied for 15
th in total wins.
James Yu now ranks 25
th in school history in career doubles wins with 41.
