BALTIMORE, MD – The 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team jumped out to a five-goal lead after three quarters and then held off 13
th-ranked St. Joseph's in a wild fourth quarter finish as the Blue Jays grabbed a thrilling 15-14 win at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays win their second straight and improve to 4-2 on the year, while the Hawks lost for the first time and slip to 3-1.
Â
Up 8-7 early in the third quarter, the Blue Jays used a quarter-ending four-goal run to grab a 12-7 lead entering the final period. Freshman
Matt Collison bookended the four-goal spree with
Cameron Chauvette and Johnathen Peshko also scoring during the run; all four goals were assisted by senior
Jacob Angelus as the Blue Jays appeared to be in control entering the final 15 minutes.
Â
The final 15 minutes felt more like an entire game itself as the teams combined for 10 goals, 21 shots, eight saves and nine turnovers. Turnovers – we'll get to that later.
Â
A chaotic first 4:30 of the final period saw the teams combine for eight goals, including six in a span of 78 seconds early in the period. After Tucker Brown and Angelus traded goals in a 41-second span to make it 13-8 with 13:10 to play, things got crazy. A Matt Bohmer goal off the faceoff following the Angelus goal was followed 16 seconds later by a Carter Page strike in an unsettled situation. When the 'Hawks won the next faceoff and Stephen Dwyer backed in his defender on the wing and stuck one high, it was 13-11 with 12:38 on the clock.
Â
The Blue Jays answered quickly as junior
Tyler Dunn won the ensuing faceoff and fired home his first goal of the season before Page and the Blue Jays'
Dylan Bauer traded goals in a 38-second span to give the Blue Jays a 15-12 lead with 10:30 remaining.
Â
The Hawks pressed down the stretch, but Blue Jay goalie
Tim Marcille posted five of his 11 saves in the game in the fourth period to help maintain the three-goal margin until just over three minutes remained and Levi Anderson scored an extra-man goal off a rebound to cut the deficit to two at the 3:10 mark. It was a one-goal game for the first time since early in third quarter 52 seconds later when William King got to the crease and scored from in tight.
Â
The Blue Jays had possession late and a chance to grab a two-goal lead, but Robbie Seeley stopped a
Garrett Degnon laser from 10 yards and the Hawks would take possession and clear with under a minute to play.
Â
Working out of a timeout with less than 30 seconds remaining, the Hawks tried to isolate Dwyer on junior short stick
Brett Martin, but Martin went over the head to force a turnover and the Blue Jays were able to kill off the final 15 seconds to secure the victory. In a game full of great team and individual efforts, Martin's caused turnover ultimately sealed the win for the Blue Jays.
Â
The wild ending had built throughout the game as the Blue Jays sprinted to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter with Degnon scoring two of his four on the day in the opening 15 minutes.
Â
Degnon completed his first-half hat trick early in the second quarter, but St. Joseph's answered with a four-goal run to pull even late in the period. Page scored twice during the run for the Hawks, who would trail 7-6 at the half after Chauvette scored his second goal of the season off a nifty feed to the crease from junior
Ryan Evans.
Â
The 7-6 halftime lead was 8-7 early in the period before Collison jump-started the four-goal run that gave Hopkins the 12-8 lead. As it turned out, there was still plenty to come in the final 15 minutes.
