Johns Hopkins Rallies to Defeat Eighth-Ranked NC Wesleyan

LEXINGTON, VA – The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team rallied from a 4-2 deficit to beat eighth-ranked NC Wesleyan, 5-4, Saturday morning at Washington & Lee.
 
Juniors James and Thomas Yu grabbed the first point of the match with an 8-2 win at first doubles over Tshepo Mosarwa and Albert Sitwell. The Bishops then took points at second and third to head into singles with a 2-1 lead. John Falke and Augusto Roca tied the match at 1-1 with an 8-4 win over graduate students George Jiang and Mason Liu. Sean Keane and Diego Segovia put NC Wesleyan ahead when they beat junior Daniel Ardila and graduate student Joe DeMarco, 8-4, at second.
 
Thomas Yu tied the match at two when he beat Mosarwa 6-1, 6-4 at first singles. Falke answered with a 6-4, 6-3 win over James Yu at second to put the Bishops back on top, 3-2. Segovia pushed the lead to 4-2 when he defeated Ardila 6-2, 6-4 at fourth. Liu then started the Blue Jay rally with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Luca Knese at third. DeMarco followed with a come-from-behind win over Andy Fanzaga 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3 to tie the match. Graduate student Jonathan Zhang then finished off a three-setter 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to secure the win for Hopkins.
 
Hopkins improves to 8-6 all-time against NC Wesleyan and avenges last season's NCAA Tournament loss to NC Wesleyan.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, March 5 as the Blue Jays take on host Washington & Lee. The non-conference contest is slated for a 10:00 am start.
 
Notes: Thomas Yu is now tied for 15th in program history with 45 career singles wins.
