#16 Johns Hopkins Holds off Late Roanoke Surge to Earn 6-5 Win

Awadzi Punches Out Seven in Five No-Hit Innings

  • Score: #16 Johns Hopkins- 6, Roanoke- 5
  • Records: JHU (6-0), Roanoke (6-6)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Bearden Awadzi (1-0), L: Owen Ledford (1-0), S: Ben Keever (1)
  • The Short Story: The Blue Jays got five dominant innings from freshman pitcher Bear Awadzi and used a first inning five-run burst to hang on to a 6-5 victory over Roanoke.
How it Happened
  • Much like they did in their last contest, Johns Hopkins jumped out to an early lead in the first inning by placing five on the board to start things off. Dilllon Souvignier, Tripp Myers, Alex Shane and Damian Brown all picked up RBI singles, three of which came with two outs in the inning.
  • The Blue Jays scratched across their only other run of the game in the fourth inning on an RBI base-hit by Souvignier to left field that plated Brown to give JHU a 6-0 lead.
  • Freshman pitcher Bear Awadzi dazzled is his first start of the season. Awadzi was mixing pitches and locations and had the Maroons off-balance throughout his entire outing. Awazdi pitched five no-hit innings, striking out seven, to put himself in-line for the win.
  • After being held hitless until the seventh inning, the Maroons lineup came to life scoring four runs in the top of the 8th. Caleb Grizzard picked up a pinch-hit single to get Roanoke their first run, followed by RBI knocks from Jonny Wall and Conner Butler to pull within two heading into the ninth.
  • Roanoke was able to push a run across in the ninth inning and had the tying run in scoring position with two outs. Ben Keever was on the mound for the Jays and had to work his way out of a jam to earn JHU the victory. Keever was able to punch out the last batter looking, holding on to a 6-5 win for Johns Hopkins.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Blue Jays picked up all 11 of their hits in the first four innings of the contest. Eight of the nine starters for Johns Hopkins picked up a hit in the game with Souvignier going 3-for-3.
  • JHU no-hit the Maroons for 6.2 innings before Connor Butler picked up a double with two outs in the seventh to break up the no-hitter. Before that Awadzi and Matt Savedoff combined to retire 20 out of 21 batters.
  • Roanoke had six of their seven hits come in the eighth inning or later, with only one of those being for extra-bases.
