SWARTHMORE, PA – Johns Hopkins fell to host and 28
th-ranked Swarthmore, 5-4, on Saturday in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays slip to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Garnet improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial.
The Garnet took a 2-1 lead after doubles and then won XX of the singles matches to take the win. Max Lindstrom and Rushil Patel took the first point of the match with an 8-1 win at second doubles over
Jonathan Zhang and
Mason Liu.
George Jiang and
Joe DeMarco then tied the match when they beat Max Pogorelov and Andres Fente, 8-3, at third. Michael Melnikov and Purushotham Koduri then put Swarthmore back on top with an 8-7 (1) win at first over
James and
Thomas Yu.
Melnikov pushed the Garnet's lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (10) win at first singles over
Thomas Yu. Liu answered for the Blue Jays and made it 3-2 when he beat Lindstrom 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (8). In yet another three-setter, it was Lalith Suresh that came out on top, beating
James Yu 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (3) to make it 4-2.
DeMarco pulled Hopkins back within one when he defeated Josiah Myers-Lipton 6-3, 6-4 at fourth. Aamish Pal then clinched the victory for Swarthmore with a 6-2, 6-2 win at sixth over
Andrew Tran. Daniel Ardila closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Koduri at fifth singles.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, April 4 as the Blue Jays host the Washington College Shoremen. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
