BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team outscored Rutgers, 8-1, in the second half to stun the 25
th-ranked Scarlet Knights in Big Ten action Saturday at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays improve to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the B1G, while the Knights fall to 4-6 and 0-4 in the conference.
Hopkins found itself trailing 11-5 with 3:57 to play in the third quarter but scored the final seven goals of the game to grab the 12-11 win.
Bailey Cheetham sparked the rally when she scored with 2:56 to play in the third after the defense forced a Rutgers' turnover.
Campbell Case completed her first career hat trick to open the fourth-quarter scoring at 12:06. She curled from behind the cage, took a pass from
Ashley Mackin and beat Sophia Cardello in-tight.
Mackin then scored off a give-and-go with
Maeve Barker and it was 11-8 with 10:50 to play. Just 59 seconds later,
Charlotte Smith used a
Georgie Gorelick pick to get free down the middle of the arc for her second. Gorelick followed with a goal off the dodge 65 seconds later and just like that it was a one-goal game at 8:46. Cheetham then tied the game, the first tie of the game, with a free position goal at the 6:20-mark.
Gorelick gave Hopkins its first lead of the game just 45 seconds later when she dodged the right alley, tiptoed the crease and scored from the doorstep. The Blue Jay defense forced a pair of Scarlet Knight turnovers in the final five minutes to secure the win.
Rutgers jumped out to a three-goal lead on the strength of a pair of Cassidy Spillis' goals in the game's opening seven minutes. Smith got Hopkins on the board when she scored with a defender draped on her at 6:57. The Blue Jays then capitalized on a failed RU clear that ended with a Mackin behind-the-back pass to Case on the doorstep to make it 3-2.
Ashley Moynahan scored with 2:14 to play in the first to push the lead back to two and ignite a four-goal spurt for the Scarlet Knights. Janey Galski capped the run at 6:13 in the second to stake Rutgers to a 7-2 lead. Case and
Abbey Hurlbrink sandwiched a pair of goals around one from Spillis and it was 8-4 with 1:37 to play. Case blew home a shot from the top of the eight-meter and Hurlbrink dodged right down the middle of the arc and it was a four-goal game. Rutgers would score twice in the final 41 seconds however to take a 10-4 lead into the half.
Mackin scored off a give-and-go with Barker midway through third to pull Hopkins within five. Spillis answered for Rutgers at 4:04, but just 68 seconds later, it was Cheetham scoring to spark that stunning seven-goal rally.
Mackin finished with four points (2g, 2a) for her third game this season of at least four points. Cheetham (2g, 1a) and Case (3g) tallied three points each. Gorelick (2g), Barker (2a) and Smith (2g) added two points each.
Haleigh Moore had a game and career-high five caused turnovers while
Madison McPherson had a career-high six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
The Blue Jays held the Scarlet Knights to just three second-half shots and no goals in the final 19:04. It is the third time this season that Hopkins has held an opponent scoreless for a quarter. The six-goal come-back is the largest for the Blue Jays in 20 years.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 5 as the Blue Jays travel to College Park to take on 10
th-ranked Maryland. Opening draw at SECU Stadium is slated for 5:00 pm.
