Johns Hopkins Defeats Washington & Lee and Ursinus

BALTIMORE, MD – The 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team closed out the regular season with a pair of wins Saturday. Hopkins beat 21st-ranked Washington & Lee, 6-3, and then shutout host Ursinus, 9-0. The Blue Jays improve to 17-3 overall and 9-0 in the Centennial Conference.
 
Hopkins took a 2-1 lead after doubles and then won four of the six singles matches to secure the win over W&L. The Generals took the first point of the match when Lauren Long and Gabi Moss beat Kamila Wong and Jay Xiao, 8-2, at first doubles. Anjali Devireddy and Christina Huynh then tied the match with an 8-4 win over Riho Iijima and Grace Lorenz at third. Mary Beth Hurley and Emily Javedan then gave the Blue Jays the lead with an 8-5 win at second over Margaret Carlton and Izzy Koziol.
 
Moss won the first singles match, beating Xiao 6-0, 6-4 at second, to tie the match at two. Wong answered with a 6-1, 6-4 win at third over Koziol to put JHU back on top, 3-2. Huynh then beat Iijima 6-3, 6-3 at fifth to push the lead to two. Ali Bader clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win at sixth over Carlton. Devireddy then won a tough three-setter over Lorenz 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 at fourth. Long picked up another point for the Generals when she defeated Hurley 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 at first.
 
Hopkins did not drop a set as the Blue Jays blanked the host Bears in the afternoon. Niamh Harding and Hallie Gallo put the Blue Jays on top early when they beat Ava Compagnoni and Bella Vassalluzzo, 8-3, at third. Zoe Hsieh and Bea Manjon then beat Claire Burke and Avery Samer, 8-2, at second. Catharina Ausfahl and Celina Liu wrapped up the doubles' sweep with an 8-2 victory at first over Allie Armour and Shannon Stewart.
 
Hsieh pushed the lead to four as she lost just one game in her win over Stewart at third singles. Harding then clinched the win as she beat Burke 6-2, 6-2 at second. Ausfahl followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Samer at fourth. Manjon put Hopkins on top 7-0 when she beat Compagnoni 6-1, 6-2 at fifth. Liu then defeated Armour 6-3, 7-6 (5) at first. Gallo secured the shutout as she lost just one game in her win over Fiona Finnerty at sixth.
 
Notes: Javedan is now tied for 14th with 43 career doubles wins • This was the Blue Jays' first win over the Generals since 2016 • JHU has now won 155 straight Centennial Conference regular season matches in a streak that dates to 2007.
