BALTIMORE, MD – Greg Chimera, the James F. Margraff head coach of football at Johns Hopkins, announced today that four individuals have been elected to serve as team captains during the upcoming 2023 season. The four first-time captains include seniors Luke Schuermann (DL) and Spencer Uggla (RB) along with juniors Garrett Brophy (OL) and Bay Harvey (QB), who were selected in a team-wide vote at the conclusion of spring practice.
Below is a quick look at the 2023 Johns Hopkins football captains.
Garrett Brophy (Jr. • OL)
Of Note: A two-year starter at guard who has established himself as one of the top young offensive linemen in the nation. Earned Second Team D3football.com All-Region honors and First Team All-Centennial honors last season. He was the only sophomore offensive lineman in Region 2 and one of just seven nationwide to earn First or Second Team All-Region honors in 2022. Also earned Second Team All-Centennial honors as a freshman in 2021.
Bay Harvey (Jr. • QB)
Of Note: Backup quarterback during first two seasons who is poised to take over as the Blue Jay starter in 2023. Played in 10 games in 2022 and was 34-of-43 (.791) for 362 yards with four touchdowns while also handling the kickoff duties. Is 52-of-73 (.710) for 608 yards with eight TDs and no interceptions in 16 games in his career.
Luke Schuermann (Sr. • DL)
Of Note: One of the most decorated players in school history. A two-time Academic All-American and a two-time All-American, he has twice been named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Year and has also earned First Team All-Centennial Conference and First Team D3football.com All-Region honors two times as well. He set JHU single-season records with 14 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss in 2022 with a career-high 70 tackles from his defensive end position.Â
Spencer Uggla (Sr. • RB)
Of Note: Johns Hopkins' top returning rusher entering the 2023 season as he rushed for 529 yards and eight touchdowns last season; eight rushing touchdowns tied for the team lead. Will enter the 2023 season just 278 yards shy of 1,000 rushing yards for his career and would become the 29th player in program history to reach the mark.  Also one of the Blue Jays' top special teams performers with 27 tackles over the last two seasons.
Johns Hopkins will open the 2023 season on Saturday, September 2 when the Blue Jays welcome Ithaca to Homewood Field (12 pm); the game will mark the first-ever meeting between the Blue Jays and Bombers. Ithaca finished the 2022 season at 12-1 and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals, while Johns Hopkins went 10-1 and topped Stevenson in the Centennial-MAC Bowl Series.
