The Short Story: The top-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to turn a 5-4 lead into a 9-4 advantage and the Blue Jays topped eighth-ranked Wheaton (MA), 9-5, in the second game of the Super Regional at Babb Field Saturday afternoon. The win sets up a winner-take-all game between the two teams later this afternoon with a trip to the Division III World Series on the line.
Â
How it Happened
• The teams traded runs in the first, third and fifth innings with the Blue Jays grabbing a 4-3 lead after five on the strength of a two-run first and single runs in the third and fifth.
• After Wheaton scratched out a run to open the game on two singles and a sacrifice fly, the Blue Jays answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 2-1 lead. A bases-loaded walk by
Tripp Myers chased home
Alex Shane, who led off with a double, and
Caleb Cyr was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Hopkins the 2-1 lead.
• An RBI-single by Nick Croteau plated AJ Guidnon in the top of the third for the Lyons, but Hopkins answered with a
Caleb Cyr home run to left center in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2.
• That lead held until the top of the fifth, when Croteau doubled-home Mike Maher to pull the Lyons even again. The Blue Jays quickly answered in the bottom of the inning when Myers went deep to left center to give Hopkins a 4-3 lead.
• After the teams traded runs in the sixth to make it 5-4, the Blue Jays put up a four-spot in the bottom of the seventh to grab a five-run lead. An RBI-double from Shane, a
Matthew Cooper sacrifice fly and a two-out, two-run home run to right from
Dillon Souvignier fueled the four-run outburst for the Blue Jays.
• The Lyons pushed one across in the top of the eighth and threatened for more as they had the bases loaded, but Blue Jay reliever
Jaspar Carmichael worked his way out of the jam with an inning-ending strikeout to end the threat.

Inside the Box Score – Johns Hopkins
• Shane went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. He is the sixth Johns Hopkins player – and first freshman - to have four or more hits in an NCAA Tournament game.
• Souvignier and
Dylan Whitney both collected two hits for the Blue Jays, who put 19 runners on base with 11 hits and eight walks.
• Three Blue Jay pitchers worked during the game with
Ben Keever going 2.1 innings to get the victory. He allowed one hit and one run before Carmichael came in and earned the save by working 1.1 scoreless innings.
• The four home runs for the Blue Jays pushed their season total to an NCAA Division III-record 107 on the year. The previous record of 104 had been set by the College of Wooster in 1997.
Â
Inside the Box Score - Wheaton
• The first three batters in the Wheaton lineup - Guindon, Maher and Croteau - all collected two hits as they combined to go 6-of-14 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
• The Lyons collected 11 hits in the game and this marks the 35
th time this season that Wheaton has had 10 or more hits in a game. The Lyons are 31-4 in those 35 games.
• Four Lyon pitchers combined to strand 12 Blue Jays on base and keep Wheaton alive. Ryan McCarroll allowed four runs as the Lyon starter, but consistently worked his way out of trouble early in the game before giving way to josh Fischer, who pitched two innings and allowed three walks, one hit and one run to take the loss.
