Change in NCAA Rules Allows Volunteer Assistant to Fulfill Full Time Role

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse coach Peter Milliman announced today the promotion of volunteer assistant coach Brian Kelly into a full time role effective July 1, 2023.  Kelly joined Milliman's staff on June 28, 2022 as the volunteer assistant and served in that capacity through the 2023 season.

Recent NCAA rule changes around the composition of a Division I Men's Lacrosse coaching staff is allowing the change.  Previously, the coaching staff was limited to three full time coaches (one head coach, two assistant coaches) and one volunteer assistant.  The recent modification by the NCAA allows teams to have four full time coaches with one head coach and three assistant coaches.

Kelly helped guide the Blue Jays to a 12-6 record, a share of the Big Ten regular season title and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2023.  Johns Hopkins earned the number six seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked fifth in the final Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.  Kelly worked closely with the Blue Jay goalies and assisted Milliman, defensive coordinator Jamison Koesterer and offensive coordinator John Crawley with all facets of the program, including game and practice planning, recruiting and player development.

Prior to returning to Johns Hopkins in 2022, Kelly had spent 10 seasons as the head coach and five seasons as an assistant coach at nearby Goucher College.  During his playing career at Johns Hopkins, Kelly helped the Blue Jays to the NCAA Semifinals in 1992 and 1993 and garnered Honorable Mention USILA All-America honors as a midfielder in 1993.  He was awarded Johns Hopkins' George D. Penniman Award as the team's top midfielder and the Turnbull-Reynolds Trophy for Outstanding Sportsmanship and Leadership during his final season.
