CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- The Johns Hopkins baseball team fell short of Baldwin Wallace, 6-3 in game one on Monday to force a decisive game two later this afternoon to determine which team will advance to the three-game winner-take-all championship series.
The Yellow Jackets came out swinging in the first two innings of the game and pushed a run across in each of the first two frames. Sean Kolenich slid around a Caleb Cyr tag on a wild pitch to score the game's first run, followed by a sacrifice fly to right field by Matt Terzola in the second.
In the top of the fourth, Baldwin Wallace extended the lead when Vincent Capolupo smoked a two-out full count triple over the right fielder's head to bring in the 'Jackets'Â third run. Charlie Monterrosa got the next batter to ground out to third base to strand Capolupo at third. The scoring continued in the fifth inning after a couple walks from Johns Hopkins pitchers. Nick Castillo added an RBI on a sac fly line drive to center field to make it 4-0. Brandon Gelpi followed up with a base-hit of his own to center field to open the lead up to five.
Johns Hopkins found its footing offensively for the first time in the bottom of the sixth. After a Dillon Souvignier double to left center, Shawn Steuerer picked up his 11th RBI of the World Series by lacing a triple to right field. Sam Frank followed with a looping double into right center field that brought Steuerer home to make it 5-2. The Blue Jays ended up leaving runners at first and third after a strike out and line out.
Steuerer was up to his old tricks again in the bottom of the seventh, coming through with a clutch two-out single up the middle to make it 5-3. The Yellow Jackets answered with an insurance run in the top of the eighth on a single punched through the left side by Luke Vonderhaar.
Johns Hopkins had a prime opportunity to score in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and two outs for Matthew Cooper. Cooper drove a ball to the deepest part of center field but Capolupo leaped up and made a game-saving catch to hold the Blue Jays scoreless.
The Blue Jays went quietly in the ninth inning and Baldwin Wallace came away with the 6-3 win to force the winner-take-all game later today.
