FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team opened the season with a 1-1 draw versus NC Wesleyan Friday at the UMW Invitational.
The Blue Jays struck first in the 78
th minute as they capitalized on a Bishops' foul near the right sideline. Graduate student
Max Edelstein took the free kick, sending the ball deep into the NC Wesleyan box. Junior
Jacob Hammond headed the ball past Rafael Farina and inside the back post to stake Hopkins to a 1-0 lead.
NC Wesleyan answered in the 84
th minute to tie the game at one. Osei Darko won a 50-50 ball on the far sideline and then sent the ball into the Blue Jay box. Bastien Dechamps ran onto the ball and one-timed a shot to the bottom right corner.

Aidan Dunphy nearly put the Blue Jays back on top in the 89
th minute with a volley deep in the box, but a Bishops' defender knocked it out for a corner kick.
Hopkins out shot NC Wesleyan 12-5 and had an 11-1 advantage in corners. Graduate student
JP Furman finished with a pair of saves in his Blue Jay debut. Farina tallied four saves for the Bishops.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 3 as the Blue Jays take on host and fourth-ranked Mary Washington. The non-conference contest is slated for a 2:00 pm start.
