BALTIMORE, MD –
Sara Stephenson led the way for the Jays with her first victory of the season as the Johns Hopkins women's cross country team finished second at the Baltimore Metro Invitational Friday night. The Blue Jays fell second only to Maryland, who claimed four of the next five top spots in the race.
Picking up where she left off a season ago, Stephenson took home first in Friday's season-opener, picking up four places in the final two kilometers and crossing the line in 17:56.50. Next to finish for the Hopkins were a trio of graduate students in
Callie Jones,
Sarah Conant, and
Jenna Lange. In her return to the sports, Jones crossed the line in seventh with a time of 18:37.611 followed closely by Conant (18:40.06) and Lange (18:42.10) who finished in eighth and ninth respectively.
The final three point-getters for the Jays were
Cooper Brotherton,
Adriana Catalano and
Cameron Coletti. Sophomores Brotherton and Catalano finished the 5K in 11
th and 13
th with times of 19:01.10 and 19:21.90, while Coletti — Hopkins' highest finishing freshman — crossed the line in 19:39.44 to finish 15
th.
Maryland claimed first place in the meet with 23 points, with Hopkins (32) and Loyola (Md.) (99) rounding out the top three.
The Jays return to action Friday, Sept. 15 to compete in the Paddy Doyle Meet of Champions, with competition set to start at 10 a.m.
