Uggla Named to Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Senior Running Back Becomes Hopkins' Fifth All-Time Selection

NORTHBROOK, IL – Johns Hopkins senior running back Spencer Uggla is among the 22 college football players from all Divisions of the NCAA and NAIA who has been named to the 32nd Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® for outstanding contributions to their communities it was announced today.  Uggla is the fifth Johns Hopkins football player named to the team as he joins Jim Sanders (2005), Brian Nickel (2006), Tim Miller (2009) and Alan Gorny (2022).
 
Team officials from across the country nominated players from their schools for the prestigious award based on their work off the field.  A list of 136 nominees was announced in July before the final 22-player roster was chosen by the selection panel, which includes former Good Works Team players, journalists and officials from Allstate and the AFCA. The panel looks for players that demonstrate exceptional leadership on and off the football field.
 
Uggla is a co-captain on the 2023 Johns Hopkins football team and has been a key contributor on offense and special teams in his two full seasons (freshman season of 2020 was canceled due to COVID pandemic).  In his career, he has rushed for 802 yards and 13 touchdowns, has 10 receptions for 70 yards and counts 27 special teams tackles to his credit entering this week's game at Salisbury.  He is tied for 22nd in school history in career rushing touchdowns after tying for the team lead with eight in 2022 and he needs just 198 rushing yards to become the 29th player in program history to reach 1,000,
 
A neuroscience major with a 3.76 cumulative grade point average, Uggla was named to the 2021 College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team and was a Third Team D3football.com All-Region selection as a special teams standout in 2021 as well.  In addition, he has twice been named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll and was named to the 2022 Centennial Conference Football All-Sportsmanship Team.
 
Since arriving at Hopkins, he has helped the Blue Jays to a 22-3 record with one Centennial title (2021) a trip to the NCAA Playoffs (2021) and a Centennial-MAC Bowl victory (2022). 
 
Uggla has been active in a number of community service and volunteer activities throughout his career at Johns Hopkins and before.  Among the key initiatives he's been a part of while at Johns Hopkins:
 
Johns Hopkins Food Pantry (August 2022 – Present)
Volunteer in the Hopkins Food Pantry, which has more than 550 registered shoppers and distributed nearly 13,000 pounds of product in 2022.  Fills a variety of roles, including stocking, inventory and shipment receiving for the pantry, which is open to all members of the Johns Hopkins community.
 
Hopkins Neuro-Oncology Surgical Outcomes Lab (January 2022 – Present)
Volunteer with the Director of Neurosurgical Oncology at Johns Hopkins' Bayview Medical Center. Focuses on improving surgical outcomes and quality of life care for patients with primary and metastatic brain and skull base tumors.

HERO (December 2021 – Present)
Nationally certified EMT who volunteers with the Hopkins Emergency Response Organization (HERO).  HERO is a 24/7 rapid response service that provides BLS level care on the Johns Hopkins campus in support of Lifeline's Critical Care Team, University Security and the Student Health Center.  Members of HERO maintain a Maryland EMT-B certification involving 200 hours of classroom learning and more than 100 training hours.
 
I Run 4 Michael (2015 – Present)
Long-time volunteer with the I Run 4 Michael Organization.  Organization fosters relationships between athletes and those with physical or mental challenges. Uggla is paired with a young man named Daniel, who has Down Syndrome. Fosters a positive and supportive relationship and works to support Daniel and his family and give encouragement through the adversity and challenges he faces.

About the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® 
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field. The AFCA became the governing body of the award in 1997 and continues to honor college football players who go the extra mile for those in need. Allstate worked to present the award starting with the 2008 season.  
  
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) leads all conferences with 84 selections to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team since it began in 1992. The SEC is followed by the Atlantic Coast Conference with 55 selections and the Big 12 Conference and Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, both with 41 selections. Georgia is in first place with 23 honorees to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. The Bulldogs are followed by Kentucky and Bethel (Minn.) with 17 honorees. Super Bowl XLII, XLVI and XLI champion quarterbacks Eli and Peyton Manning were members of the 2002 and 1997 Allstate AFCA Good Works Teams, respectively.  
  
About the AFCA  
The AFCA was founded in 1922 and currently has more than 11,000 members around the world ranging from the high school level to the professional ranks. According to its constitution, the AFCA was formed, in part, to "maintain the highest possible standards in football and in the coaching profession" and to "provide a forum for the discussion and study of all matters pertaining to football."
