Johns Hopkins Downs #4 Salisbury in Shootout

BALTIMORE, MD – The second-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team defeated fourth-ranked Salisbury, 2-1, in a shootout Wednesday night in the Blue Jays home opener. The Blue Jays improve to 4-1 on the season while the Sea Gulls drop to 3-2.

Hopkins got on the board midway through the second quarter off a blast from senior Mikayla Schoff. The Blue Jays earned a penalty corner and senior Siena Urbanski inserted the corner to Schoff at the top of the circle. She took one touch and fired a rocket inside the right post.

Salisbury answered with 2:08 to play in the third quarter to knot the score. Molly Reardon dribbled towards the Blue Jay circle before centering the ball. Marli McDorman swept the ball wide to Arden Hunteman, who tipped it in at the back post.

The Blue Jays turned on the pressure in the fourth quarter, outshooting the Sea Gulls, 5-0. But could not get the go-ahead goal and the game headed to overtime and then a shootout. Hopkins prevailed in the shootout, 3-1, with senior Gen Mehra notching the winner.

Hopkins outshot Salisbury, 14-9, and had a 12-5 advantage in corners. The Blue Jay held the Sea Gulls, who entered the game ranked eighth in the country in scoring, to four goals below their average. SU was also averaging more than 23 shots per game.

Senior Alexis Loder finished with four saves in the win while Addy O'Connell also made four saves.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 20 versus fifth-ranked Messiah. The non-conference game is slated for a 4:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
