Johns Hopkins Falls to Wagner in MAWPC Opener

LEWISBURG, PA – Johns Hopkins dropped a heartbreaker to Wagner, 15-13, to open the Bucknell Invitational Saturday.

Freshman Owen Bartlett scored twice in the first 59 seconds to give the Blue Jays a quick 2-0 lead. Kyle Chambers cut the lead in half with the Seahawks' first goal at 6:43. Sophomore Gavin Brooke answered with a five-meter goal at the 3:48-mark and it was 3-1 JHU.

Zsombor Gyemant and Laszlo Strasser scored back-to-back goals just 19 seconds apart and the game was tied at three. Bartlett put Hopkins back on top at 2:31, but a six-on-five goal for Gyemant knotted the score at four. Strasser made it two in a row and Wagner had its first lead with 1:38 on the clock. Bartlett scored his fourth goal of the quarter to tie the game once again, but a late goal by Ben Zovickian gave the Seahawks a 6-5 lead at the break.

The teams traded goals to open the second and Wagner led 7-6 just two minutes in. Eliot Alvarez scored on a six-on-five to spark a three-goal spurt as the Seahawks pushed out to a 10-6 lead. Sophomore Jason Mihalopoulos halted the run and pulled the Blue Jays back within two at the half. Ryan Lanier opened the third-quarter scoring with a goal to put Wagner up 11-7. Freshman Ethan Babel answered and ignited a three-goal run for Hopkins as the Blue Jays cut the lead to one with 2:07 to play in the third. Alvarez had the final say of the period and staked Wagner to a 12-10 lead after three.

Lanier again opened the scoring in the quarter and pushed the lead to three. Back-to-back goals from freshman Alec Baker and Mihalopoulos once again made it a one-score game with 2:53 on the clock. Wagner answered with back-to-back goals just 34 seconds apart to go back up three. Baker got one back for Hopkins with 1:46 to play, but that's as close as the Blue Jays could get.

Bartlett led Hopkins with his four goals, coming on just four shots. Brooke scored twice and tied his career-high with four assists. Baker and sophomore Daniel Palfi added three-point (2g, 1a) outings. Babel had a team-best four drawn ejections while Baker added three and two steals. Graduate student Saahil Naik finished with eight saves, including a pair of five-meter shots, to go with an assist and two steals.
