BALTIMORE, MD – Junior
Liz Falterer scored a pair of goals to lead the third-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 2-1 overtime win over fourth-ranked Messiah Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 5-1 on the season while the Falcons fall to 5-1 with their first loss of the season. The victory was head coach
Jane Wells' 250
th of her career, as she is now 250-87 in 18 seasons.
After a back-and-forth first quarter, it was Messiah who struck first. The Falcons needed just 59 seconds to get on the board in the second quarter. Mallory Kline got a shot off in traffic that was blocked by the Blue Jay defense. Carrie Bair was able to collect the rebound and slipped a shot at the left post to stake Messiah to a 1-0 lead.
Hopkins answered four minutes later, taking advantage of a penalty corner. Falterer received the ball at the top of the circle and passed off to junior
Jenna Halpin. She passed it right back to Falterer, who banged home the tying goal under the pads of Falcons' goalie Catie Brubaker. That would be all the scoring for the ensuing 40 minutes as the teams battled through a scoreless second half and headed to overtime.
After getting a stop on an early Messiah corner in the overtime, Hopkins moved the ball up field. On a restart, senior
Mikayla Schoff passed to Falterer on her right. She dribbled into the Messiah circle and fired a shot to the back post to win it for the Blue Jays.
Senior
Alexis Loder played 47 minutes in goal and made one save. Sophomore
Phoebe Williams played one quarter and notched two saves. Brubaker finished with four saves in the loss for Messiah. Shots were tied at eight apiece, while the Falcons had the edge in corners, 8-4.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 23 as the Blue Jays travel to Collegeville to take on 19
