Gaston's PK Lifts Hopkins Past Dickinson, 1-0

Breiland Makes Four Saves in Shutout Victory

BALTIMORE, MD – The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team got a goal from sophomore Lily Gaston on a penalty kick with 10 minutes remaining in the second half and freshman goalie Eva Breiland punched away a header with 10 seconds remaining to fuel a 1-0 victory over visiting Dickinson at Homewood Field Wednesday evening.  The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Red Devils slip to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial.

With the Blue Jays applying pressure as the second-half clock dripped towards the 10-minute mark, a Dickinson defender was called for a handball in the box.  Gaston stepped to the line and went high to Red Devil goalie Elizabeth Allen's right and stuck it just over Allen's outstretched arms for what would prove to be the game's only goal.

Dickinson pressured late and had a golden opportunity to salvage a tie in the final 30 seconds as the Red Devils earned their fourth corner kick of the second half.  The corner was played long to the back side, where Sophia Elguera headed one towards the goal. In traffic, Breiland was able to punch it away, but the Blue Jays still had to withstand a final strike from Emily Dunkel, whose last-second offering sailed just wide of the far post as time expired.

Johns Hopkins had several chances to score before Gaston's game-winner.  Charlotte Tapp floated one toward the top of the net from 18 yards out midway through the first half, but Allen was able to punch it over the crossbar and she made a point-blank save on a Kacie Filian shot from in-tight in the 52nd minute.  The Devils' Bridget Merkel then swept another Filian chance off the line in the 56th minute and a Lilah Isenberg corner hit the back post squarely in the 59th minute but bounced out instead of in to keep in scoreless.

The Devils' two best chances before the late flurry came off a 22-yard Sarah Cudmore shot that sailed just over the bar in the first half and a 20-yard free kick in the 46th minute off the foot of Katie Vassilakos that sailed just over the crossbar.

Breiland went the distance in goal for the Blue Jays and posted four saves to earn the shutout.  Allen, who was a late addition to the lineup after a pregame injury to Dickinson's normal starter in goal, posted seven saves.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, September 23 when the Blue Jays travel to Ursinus for a Centennial Conference game against the Bears (12 pm).
