COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Host Ursinus scored a late goal to top the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team, 1-0, on a rain-soaked Patterson Field Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays fall to 4-2-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the conference while the Bears improve to 6-1-0 and 1-1-0.
After a back-and-forth first 75 minutes, it was Ursinus that got on the board, thanks to a free kick. Nick Balbierer set up the free kick just over midfield and sent a long ball deep into the Blue Jays' box. Joshua Coster headed it from a tough angle to the back post in what turned out to be the game's only goal.
The Blue Jays had good looks from
Jonathan Cui,
Ben Goodman and
Griffin Meyer in the final 10 minutes, but could not get the equalizer.
Hopkins had a 13-12 edge in shots and a 9-4 advantage in corners. Senior
Drew Valsamedis finished with six saves while the Bears' Zach Matik made seven.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 27 at McDaniel. The Centennial Conference tilt is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
