Uggla Named to Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
« Senior RB Spencer Uggla was named to the 2023 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team it was announced on September 12, 2023.
« Uggla is the fifth Johns Hopkins football player named to the team as he joins Jim Sanders (2005), Brian Nickel (2006), Tim Miller (2009) and Alan Gorny (2022).
« Uggla was nominated by Johns Hopkins officials for his work off the field, which includes volunteering at the Johns Hopkins Food Pantry and the Hopkins Neuro-Oncology Surgical Outcomes Lab. In addition, he has been active with the "I Run 4 Michael" organization since 2015 where he has been paired with a young man named Daniel who has Down Syndrome and volunteers as an EMT with HERO (Hopkins Emergency Response Organization) on the Johns Hopkins campus.
« Uggla and the 22-man All-State AFCA Good Works Team will attend the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans at the end of this season. Team members will complete community service initiatives and be honored on the field at the Sugar Bowl.
Instant Impact
« Freshman Cole Crotty wasted little time making an impact on the Blue Jay football program as he shined in his career debut in the 27-17 win over Ithaca.
« Crotty had three receptions for a team-high 83 yards and two touchdowns in the win over the Bombers.
« Crotty's first career reception went for a 54-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter that gave the Blue Jays a 14-10 lead they would never relinquish. He added a 27-yard touchdown catch late in the third quarter that pushed the lead to 27-10.
« Although data is incomplete, there is no record of another freshman scoring two touchdowns in a season-opening game for Johns Hopkins dating back to 1972.
« Crotty added five receptions for 66 yards against Christopher Newport and seven receptions for 95 yards and two scores at Salisbury to push his season totals to 15 receptions for 244 yards and four TDs.
« Crotty's four touchdown receptions are tied for the second most among freshmen in all divisions of the NCAA through games of September 23.
Record-Breaking
« Senior Luke Schuermann set Johns Hopkins single-season records for tackles for loss (26.5) and sacks (14.0) last season. He finished fourth in the nation in tackles for loss per game (2.4) and sixth in sacks per game (1.27).
« Through three games this season, Schuermann has 17 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks to run his career totals to 133 tackles, 53.5 tackles for loss and 29 sacks.
« Schuermann is just the third player in school history to record 50 or more tackles for losses, while his 29.0 sacks are the second-most by a Johns Hopkins player in the last 25 years ... Mike Kalanik recorded 29.5 sacks during his career from 2016-19.
