COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team kicked off conference play with a matchup against Ursinus Saturday afternoon, sweeping the Bears 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-15) to earn their 30
th win in program history against Ursinus.
Simrin Carlsen paced the Blue Jays (11-3, 1-0 Centennial) in kills with 12 followed by
Alice Yu (5) and
Eloise Estrada (4) as Hopkins hit .250 as a team. The Jays also had success behind the service line, where
Evelyn Batista and
Chidinma Onukwugha registered three aces each. Defensively four different players tallied two blocks for Hopkins as they held the Bears (7-8, 0-1 Centennial) to a -.070 hitting percentage — the lowest mark the Blue Jays have allowed this season.
Ursinus held the early advantage in the opening set, getting out to an 8-6 lead before Hopkins began its takeover. Starting with a kill by Onukwugha, the Jays went on a pair of 6-0 runs to fly ahead 18-10. The Bears attempted a comeback, getting as close as 23-18 before an Onukwugha block and ace closed the set 25-18.
Saturday's second set once again started evenly with the sides knotted at eight before Hopkins took the lead for good. An 8-2 run that featured kills from
Helena Swaak, Yu and Carlsen as well as a pair of blocks by Yu and Estrada put the Blue Jays up 16-10. Ursinus responded with a 3-0 run of their own to cut back into the lead, but with the score 20-17 it was
Danielle Norman sparking a set-closing 5-1 run to put Hopkins ahead 2-0 in the match.
Set 3 told a different story as Hopkins took a commanding lead early and never looked back. Capitalizing on a pair of Bears errors, an
Elysa Pulliam solo block put the Jays ahead 3-1. A kill from Ursinus' leading attacker in Caroline Sherman made it 3-2 before a 9-0 run in which
Ivy Swafford and Pulliam added more kills to their total shot the Blue Jays into a 12-2 lead. The Bears chipped away at the lead getting it to a seven-point game at 16-9, but another 4-0 run all but put the game out of reach. With the score 24-15 in favor of Hopkins,
Jordan Price secured the set and match with her second kill of the afternoon.
The Blue Jays are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 4 for a conference matchup against Gettysburg, with opening serve set for 7 p.m.
