YORK, PA – Host and 13
th-ranked York scored twice in less than 12 minutes midway through the game to upset the second-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team in non-conference action Wednesday night. The Blue Jays fall to 2-1 on the season while the Spartans improve to 2-0.
York got on the board first, scoring just 85 seconds into the contest to take the early 1-0 lead. Katie Martino collected a long ball at the right side of the circle and banged home the game's first goal. Hopkins answered with 5:26 to play in the second quarter to knot the score at one. The lead was short-lived however as YCP scored just 67 seconds later to retake the lead. Anna Simoes fired a shot from the top of the circle that was saved by senior
Alexis Loder. The ball rebounded out to Brooke Cordisco on the left post and she buried the ball with 4:19 to play in the half. The Spartans pushed their lead to two midway through the third quarter. Olivia Miller sent a long ball across the face of the Blue Jay cage and Hannah Downs poked it home at the right post.
Loder played three quarters and finished with one save, while sophomore
Phoebe Williams played one quarter and also made one save. Falterer also had a defensive save for JHU. Belle Fields made three saves to earn the win for York. Shots were even at eight apiece while Hopkins had a 4-3 edge in corners.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 9 as the Blue Jays travel to Glassboro, NJ to take on third-ranked Rowan. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
