Johns Hopkins Takes Down 13th-Ranked Franklin & Marshall, 2-1

BALTIMORE, MD – Host Johns Hopkins got a goal in each half to hand 13th-ranked Franklin & Marshall its first loss of the season. The Blue Jays beat the Diplomats 2-1 to improve to 8-3-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the Centennial Conference. F&M falls to 7-1-6 on the season and 5-1-1 in the CC.

The Diplomats nearly took an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute off a Thomas Kaplan header, but a diving save by sophomore Simon Turner kept the visitors off the board. Hopkins then grabbed the lead in the 17th minute off the foot of graduate student Jack Mendrysa. Junior Will Andrus intercepted a pass in the Blue Jays' own end and then sprung senior Will Sangpachatanaruk down the right flank. Sangpachatanaruk took two touches and the crossed the ball to Mendrysa, who buried a one-timer at the back post.

Franklin & Marshall pulled level in the 37th minute after an unlucky bounce. A clear attempt by the Blue Jays hit off the face of a Diplomat and bounced to Adam Green. He collected the ball, turned and fired a low shot just inside the right post to tie the game at one.

Turner made back-to-back saves on Jack Borden in the 64th minute, including a one-handed save at the post, to keep the teams level. The offense rewarded him in the 72nd minute. Graduate student Logan Falzarano sent a ball down the right side to junior Scotty Coleman. He carried it down and then crossed the ball to Sangpachatanaruk, who got behind his defender. He slotted the ball under a charging Nolan Booth with his left foot from 12 yards out.

Turner made three more saves in the final 18 minutes, including one with just 40 seconds to go to preserve the win.

Turner finished with a career-high nine saves to earn the win. Booth finished with a pair of saves, along with a pair of team saves. Franklin & Marshall outshot Hopkins, 23-11, and had an 11-2 advantage in corners.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 23 versus Washington College. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
