MIDDLETOWN, PA – The 14th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team scored twice early in the first half and added two more goals in the first five minutes of the second half as the Blue Jays eased past Penn State Harrisburg, 4-0, Wednesday evening. The Blue Jays run their record to 10-2-3 with the win, while the Lions slip to 7-5-4 with the loss.
Â
Johns Hopkins would get all the scoring it would need in a span of 142 seconds before the game was nine minutes old as junior
Megha Savli and senior
Katie Sullivan struck early for the Blue Jays.
Â
Salvi opened the scoring in the seventh minute when graduate student
Carrie McIntire fired a low cross through the box that Salvi volleyed into an open net near the back post at the 6:32 mark. The play started in the back with a goal kick and six different Blue Jays had a touch before Salvi punched it home.
The Blue Jays used a set piece to double their lead in the ninth minute as
Olivia Redden lofted a free kick from 40 yards out into the box that found the foot of Sullivan, who rifled one past defenseless Lion goalie
Sydney Mulka to make it 2-0 before the game was 10 minutes old.
Â
The two-goal lead held into the second half before the Blue Jays tacked on two goals in a span of 2:05 to push the margin to 4-0. Sullivan headed home a cross from Salvi in the 48
th minute after the Blue Jays pressured the Lions into a turnover near the top of the box. Just over two minutes later, a Salvi shot from the top of the box hit the hand of a Lion defender and junior
Maria Romo-Nichols converted the subsequent penalty kick to account for the fourth goal Blue Jay goal of the night.
Â
The Johns Hopkins defense took over from there as the Blue Jays limited the Lions to just four shots in what would become JHU's ninth shutout of the season.Â
Allyson Shick (2 saves) and
Stephanie Wyszkowski (1) combined on the shutout in goal for the Blue Jays.
Â
Johns Hopkins held a 16-4 advantage in shots and took eight of the game's 10 corners.
Â
Notes: Sullivan's two goals give her 53 in her career, which moves her into a tie for third place on JHU's career goal-scoring list with Meg Van de Loo (2013-16). The four-goal outburst marks the eighth time this season the Blue Jays have scored three or more goals.
Â
Johns Hopkins will close out the road portion of its regular season schedule on Saturday, October 26 when the Blue Jays travel to Haverford (12 pm).
