Second-Half Outburst Lifts Blue Jays Over Haverford, 4-2

Hopkins Locks up First Round Bye with Victory

HAVERFORD, PA – The 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team used three second-half goals to top host Haverford in its Centennial Conference matchup Saturday afternoon. The 4-2 win moves the Blue Jays to 10-3-3 overall and 6-1-1 in the Centennial Conference while the loss drops the Fords to 2-10-5 and 0-6-2 in the CC. Hopkins also clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament with its third straight victory.

The Blue Jays wasted no time opening the scoring in Saturday's contest, with the first of two Ian Whamond goals putting the visitors up early. Just over five minutes into the game, the senior combined with Will Sangpachatanaruk before taking a pair of touches and rifling a shot from the top of the box that found its way into the far corner for his third tally of the season.

The Blue Jays stayed on the front foot firing five shots in the next 15 minutes, but instead it was Haverford capitalizing on a penalty kick to level things at one at the 24:56 mark. Both sides settled into their defense before Hopkins picked things up once again in the final five minutes, but none of the Blue Jays' five shots reached the Fords' netminder keeping the score knotted at 1-1 entering the break.

After Haverford started the second half with two shots — both of which were turned away by Simon Turner — and two corners, Jonathan Cui turned the tides and started what would be an offensive outpouring over the next three minutes with his goal at the 50:26 mark. Maintaining possession in Fords territory, Francis Meyer drove toward goal before finding the senior on the left side. Cui juked a Haverford defender, letting the ball run past him before launching a left-footed shot from inside that box that bent away from the goalie and into the side netting.

The lead was short-lived as two minutes later an Olimpico goal for the Fords tied things once again at two, but the scoring was not done yet. Just 17 seconds after the equalizer, Logan Falzarano took the ball down the right sideline, beating a defender and sending a ball into the box that was sent into the back of the net by a Haverford defender to give the Blue Jays back the lead at 3-2.

Hopkins kept its foot on the gas, peppering the Fords' net — the Blue Jays took a season-high 25 shots, eight of which were on goal — before Whamond secured his brace in the 78th minute. A Hopkins throw deep in Haverford territory found the feet of Cui, who one-time a pass into the box to Whamond. The senior's first shot was saved, but the follow-up attempt off his head found the far corner to double Hopkins' lead with time winding down.

The Fords registered just one shot in the final 12 minutes, securing the 4-2 win and first-round bye in the conference tournament for the Blue Jays.

Whamond's goals were his third and fourth of the season while Sangpachatanaruk's assist on the game's opening score pushed his season total to a team-best six. Turner made four saves for Hopkins in the win, bringing the sophomore's win total to five, all of which have come this month.

The Blue Jays are back in action Friday, Nov. 1 when they host Dickinson with a chance to clinch the top overall seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament. Kickoff for the regular season finale is scheduled for 5 p.m.
