BRYN MAWR, PA – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team wrapped up its brief road trip with a Centennial Conference match against Bryn Mawr Saturday afternoon, beating the Owls in straight sets (25-10, 25-9, 25-16). The win extends the Blue Jays' win streak to 12 and moves Hopkins to 22-2 on the year with a 6-0 mark in conference play, while the loss drops Bryn Mawr to 4-15 and 0-6 in the Centennial.
Hopkins used a balanced attack in the win, getting at least five kills from seven different players —
Simone Adam paced the team with eight — en route to hitting a season-best .543.
Annika Anderson (14),
Kate Danaher (14) and
Helena Swaak (11) all registered double digit assists playing two sets apiece while
Simrin Carlsen tallied three of the Blue Jays' 10 aces in a wire-to-wire victory.
Set 1 saw Hopkins hit an otherworldly .700 while holding the Owls to a hitting percentage of 0.0.
Brooklyn Pater got things started with her first kill of the afternoon, with the sides playing relatively even until the score read 8-5 in favor of the Blue Jays. From there, however, it was Pater striking again to kickstart a 9-1 run that was capped off by a Karrer ace to balloon the lead to 17-6. Hopkins won the race to 20 following a kill by
Alice Yu, and with the score sitting at 22-10 used a 3-0 run to close out the first set 25-10.
Bryn Mawr scored the first two points of Set 2 before a 7-2 run that was bookended by a
Simone Adam kill and Anderson ace flipped the score in the Blue Jays' favor at 7-4. An Owls kill momentarily stopped the bleeding before Carlsen struck back, registering all three of her aces as part of a 10-0 run that shot Hopkins in front 17-5. The Blue Jays saw their lead get as big as 16 at 23-7 following a 5-0 run that included a trio of kills from
Chidinma Onukwugha before another Carlsen kill wrapped things up 25-9.
Saturday's final set saw the score seesaw early before an Owls service error started a 5-0 run to give Hopkins a lead it would never relinquish. With the score 8-6 it was
Elysa Pulliam registering her second of five kills in the frame to kickstart an 8-1 run that turned a two-point lead into a 16-7 advantage.
Anna Pantano took over from there rattling off three of Hopkins' next four kills to maintain a double-digit lead at 20-10 before the Owls attempted a comeback. With the Blue Jays just two points from victory, Bryn Mawr scored four of the next five before Pulliam's fifth and final kill closed out the set, 25-16 and match in sweeping fashion.
Hopkins is back in action Wednesday, Oct. 30 to take on McDaniel in its regular season home finale. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
