SWARTHMORE, PA – Johns Hopkins rode a pair of first-half goals to a 2-1 win at 19
th-ranked Swarthmore Saturday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays improve to 7-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference, while the Garnet slip to 7-3-1 and 1-3-0 in the CC.
Hopkins got on the board early with an
Ian Whamond goal.
Logan Falzarano played the ball into
Francis Meyer, who chipped the ball over the defense from about 40 yards out. Whamond ran onto the ball, settled it and then touched the ball just inside the right post in the 11
th minute.
Just over two and a half minutes later the Blue Jays led by two.
Scotty Coleman collected a pass from
Jackson Shapiro and then played the ball into the Garnet's six-yard box.
Jack Mendrysa got his foot on it, just poking it past Christian Bignotti.
Swarthmore cut the deficit in half early in the second half with an Adrien Marcelli penalty kick goal in the 49
th minute. Hopkins had two good looks at goal late in the game when Meyer's free kick just outside the box hit the crossbar in the 81
st minute. Off the rebound, Falzarano sent the ball back into the box for a
Jonathan Cui header, but Bignotti was able to turn it away.
Simon Turner finished with a career-high six saves while Bignotti made four for the Garnet. Swarthmore finished with a 15-9 advantage in shots while corners were even at five.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday at Salisbury. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start.
