Johns Hopkins Rallies to Stun Fourth-Ranked Chapman

CLAREMONT, CA – Johns Hopkins rallied from a 15-8 deficit to stun fourth-ranked Chapman, 18-17, Saturday morning at the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament.

Hopkins trailed 15-8 with under a minute to play in the third and then Chris Lo scored as time expired to make it a six-goal game. That sparked a 10-2 game-ending run for the Blue Jays. Patrick Rooney, Owen Bartlett and Ian Raley scored three goals in the first two minutes of the fourth and just like that the deficit was three. Max Blecher scored at the 5:06 mark, followed by back-to-back goals from Andrew Lee and the teams were tied at 15 with 3:45 to play.

Lee scored his third in a row to give Hopkins its first lead of the game at 2:49. Daniel Palfi pushed the lead to two just 33 seconds later. David Castillo and Christian Gotterup halted the run with back-to-back goals for the Panthers and it was 17-all. Raley scored with just 21 ticks on the clock to put the Blue Jays back on top and the defense made it stand.

Chapman jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Raley scored to spark a 3-0 Hopkins run that tied the game at 3:45 in the first. Castillo and Luke Stiebel answered with two in a row to make it a 5-3 game after one. Lo and Bartlett scored back-to-back goals to open the second and tie the game at five. Drake MacNichols scored at the 4:36-mark to ignite a 10-3 Panthers' run that saw the lead balloon to 15-8 with 56 seconds to play in the third. That set the stage for the Blue Jays' stunning run to end the game.

Bartlett led the Blue Jays with four goals and five points, while Raley (3g, 1a) and Palfi (2g, 2a) had four points each. Lee also had a hat trick and drew three ejections. Kyle Pearson made 11 saves to earn the win in the cage.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday against second-ranked Redlands in Claremont.

Notes: Raley is three points shy of the 200-point mark for his career.
