Three Early Strikes, Defense Power 3-0 Win at Bryn Mawr

Jays Score Three Times in Nine Minutes Early in the Game

BRYN MAWR, PA – The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team got all the scoring it would need in a nine-minute span early in the game and the Blue Jay defense took care of the rest in a 3-0 win at Bryn Mawr Saturday afternoon.  The win runs the Blue Jay unbeaten streak to nine games and Hopkins improves to 6-1-3 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference on the year.  The Owls slip to 3-5-2- overall and 0-4 in the Centennial.
 
The Blue Jays needed just under 11 minutes to find the back of the net as senior Katie Sullivan broke the ice at the 10:52 mark with her seventh goal of the year; the goal was assisted by Ella Macko and Juliana Taxter as the Blue Jays' consistent, early pressure finally paid off with Sullivan's strike.
 
The excitement had barely settled on the Blue Jay sideline when junior Maria Romo-Nichols found graduate student Carrie McIntire and she buried her fourth of the season to double the lead just 32 seconds after Sullivan had gotten the Jays on the board.
 
Eight minutes later, it was Sullivan closing the scoring in the 20th minute.  Graduate student Olivia Piraino controlled an Owl goal kick about 35 yards from goal and worked toward the top of the box.  After drawing a defender, she slid a perfect feed to Sullivan on her left and Sullivan blew home the 49th goal of her career.
 
The Blue Jay defense locked down the win over the final 70 minutes, allowing just one Bryn Mawr shot as Hopkins secured its second straight shutout, fourth in the last six games and fifth of the season.
 
Three Johns Hopkins goalies – Tia Harrison (45 mins), Stephanie Wyszkowski (23:31) and Eva Breiland (21:29) - were not forced to make a save in the combined shutout.
 
Notes:  Sullivan has scored at least one goal in four straight games and has six goals in those four games.  The Johns Hopkins defense has allowed a total of nine shots in four Centennial Conference games this season.
 
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday, October 9 when the Blue Jays travel to Washington College to take on the Shorewomen (7 pm)
