CHESTERTOWN, MD – The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team needed all of 29 seconds to take a lead it would never relinquish and got a milestone goal from senior
Katie Sullivan as the Blue Jays topped host Washington College, 3-0, at Kibler Field Wednesday night.
Â
Johns Hopkins pushed its unbeaten streak to 10 (7-0-3) with the win and improved to 7-1-3 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference with tonight's victory. The Shorewomen, who entered with a four-game unbeaten streak of their own (3-0-1), slip to 5-2-5 overall and 1-2-1 in the Centennial.Â
Â
Washington College had not allowed a goal in four straight games and more than 400 minutes, but the Blue Jays needed less than 30 seconds to find the back of the net. Applying early pressure, the Blue Jays struck at the 29-second mark as junior
Megha Salvi found the back of the net to give Hopkins the early one-goal lead.
Â
Washington College got to halftime down just 1-0 despite being outshot 14-2 as goalkeeper Olivia Allen posted seven first-half saves to keep the Shorewomen in the game.
Â
The one-goal lead held until the 48
th minute when the Blue Jays doubled their lead. Salvi controlled a failed clearing attempt by the Shorewomen and played a ball forward into the box, where Sullivan controlled it and fired one inside the far post. The goal was the 50
th of Sullivan's career, making her just the fourth player in program history to score 50 or more goals.
Â
Salvi struck again just over 15 minutes later as the Blue Jays transitioned quickly from their end to grab the 3-0 lead. Working down the flank to the left of Allen, the ball eventually found the foot of
Carrie McIntire, who one-timed a cross from the wing to the backside of the box, where an unmarked Salvi volleyed her second of the game past a defenseless Allen.
Â
The three-goal lead was never seriously threatened as the Blue Jays controlled possession throughout and the Johns Hopkins defense allowed just the two first-half shots. The shutout for the Blue Jay defense is its third straight, fourth in the last five games and sixth of the season.
Â
Notes:Â
• Sullivan joins
Hannah Kronick (82),
