Johns Hopkins Tops Ninth-Ranked Cortland, 5-1

MIDDLEBURY, VT – Fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins scored five first half goals and Lila Slattery tied the program's single-season points record in a 5-1 win over ninth-ranked Cortland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday. The Blue Jays improve to 19-3 and advance to Sunday's quarterfinal game, while the Red Dragons end their season at 18-2.

Slattery put the Blue Jays on the board early as they capitalized on an early penalty corner. Caeli Robinson received the corner insert and Jenna Halpin stepped up and passed it to Slattery on her left. Slattery took a touch and then fired a shot inside the near post just 3:52 into the game.

Less than three minutes later, Sophie Gomez intercepted a Red Dragons' pass deep in their end and found Slattery open in the circle, and she ripped a shot into the center of the cage to tie the program's single-season points record with 50. Liz Falterer put the punctuation on a strong first quarter when she took a cross circle pass from Halpin, drove right and fired home her fourth goal of the season with 0.6 seconds remaining.

Cortland needed just 46 seconds in the second quarter to get on the board, when Keirra Ettere redirected a centering pass into the middle of the cage. Hopkins got that one back at the 20:18 when Megan Chang took a pass from Sophia Albano and chipped a shot over the goalie and into the top left corner. Halpin then capped the first-half scoring when she poked home rebound off a Falterer shot with 2:39 left in the second quarter.

As it turned out, that would be all the scoring for the remainder of the game.

Hopkins finished with a 22-14 advantage in shots and a 12-9 edge in corners. Sophomore Aubrey Kilgore finished with a career high eight saves, with all eight coming in the second half. Emma Morgan totaled 10 saves in the loss for the Red Dragons. Kilgore tied the school single-season wins record with her 19th of the season.

Hopkins will now take on host and second-ranked Middlebury in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start at Peter Kohn Field. The winner advances to the NCAA Final Four in Lexington, VA.

Notes: Falterer broke the program's career game played record in today's game. The record of 90 games played had been held by Abby Birk (2018-22) • Slattery is two goals shy of tying the program's single-season goals record of 23. Emily Miller set the goals (23) and points (50) records in 2008.
