Strong Second Half Leads Wagner Over Johns Hopkins, 15-9

BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Wagner outscored Johns Hopkins, 9-4, in the second half en route to a 15-9 win Saturday afternoon in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) action. The Blue Jays slip to 11-17 overall and 3-7 in the MAWPC, while the Seahawks improve to 12-13 and 4-3 in the conference.

The teams traded goals over the opening five minutes, and it was 2-2 after a Quint Steffey six-on-five goal. Matt Wedlock and Matan Friedenberg then scored back-to-back goals 31 seconds apart to put the Seahawks up two. Max Blecher and Ethan Babel answered with a two-goal spurt in the final 70 seconds to make it a 4-4 game after one.

Wagner scored twice in the first 69 seconds of the second to go up 6-4, but Andrew Lee cut the deficit in half with a man-up goal with 5:02 to play in the quarter. That would be the final score of the period and the Seahawks took a 6-5 lead into the break.

Kyle Chambers scored 64 seconds into the third to push the lead back to two. But Lee answered with another six-on-five goal and it was 7-6 with 5:37 on the clock. Kristian Stanczewski then scored to spark a five-goal run that saw the Seahawks take a 12-6 lead at the 6:21-mark in the fourth. Alec Baker halted the run with back-to-back goals and the Blue Jays were back within four less than a minute later. Wagner then closed the game with a 3-1 spurt to grab the 15-9 win.

Baker led the Blue Jays with three goals, five drawn ejections and four steals. Lee (2g), Babel (1g, 1a) and Daniel Palfi (2a) finished with two points each. Palfi's second assist was the 100th of his career as he became just the 10th player in program history to reach the milestone. Babel also drew three ejections and Owen Bartlett drew four to go with one assist. Kyle Pearson made 13 saves in the cage.

Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, November 3 with a pair of MAWPC games. JHU will host second-ranked Fordham at 10:00 am and Navy at 3:00 pm.
