BALTIMORE, MD – Undefeated and second-ranked Fordham jumped out to a 7-2 lead and went on to beat host Johns Hopkins, 28-12, in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) action Sunday morning. The Blue Jays fall to 11-18 overall and 3-8 in the MAWPC while the Rams improve to 24-0 and 10-0 in the conference.
Fordham scored the game's four goals to push out to an early lead. Sophomore
Owen Bartlett got Hopkins on the board with a six-on-five goal at 4:24. Marco Napolitano answered with a five-meter score to spark an 8-1 run that saw the Rams' lead balloon to 12-2 eight minutes later.
Freshman
Andrew Lee halted the run with back-to-back goals just 58 seconds apart. Fordham answered with goals from Luca Provenziani and George Papanikolaou to make it a 15-4 game with 1:28 to play. Bartlett had the final say of the half as he scored with six ticks remaining to make it a 10-goal game at the half.
The Rams scored the first three goals of the third quarter to push out to an 18-5 lead.
Andrew Lee then scored on a power play at the 5:35-mark. The teams traded goals over the ensuing five and a half minutes, and it was a 21-9 game. Napolitano answered an
Alec Baker penalty shot with a score of his own to ignite a 7-3 spurt game-ending spurt for the Rams.
Lee led the Blue Jays with a game and career-high six goals. His sixth goal of the game was his 60
th of the season and broke Ryan Ford's (1999) program record for goals by a freshman. Sophomore
Ethan Babel finished with five points (1g, 4a), including the 100
th point of his career. Bartlett added four points (3g, 1a) and notched his seventh hat trick this season.
Hopkins closes out its home slate against Navy at 3:00 pm on Sunday, November 3.
