Navy Tops Johns Hopkins in Home Finale

BALTIMORE, MD – Navy defeated host Johns Hopkins, 16-8, in the Blue Jays' final home game of the season Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays wrapped up a nine-game homestand as they fall to 11-19 overall and 3-9 in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) action. The Midshipmen improve to 18-9 overall and 8-4 in the conference.

Navy jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the 3:41-mark in the first before sophomore Alec Baker scored an even-strength goal less than a minute later. Kiefer Black and Quinn Bartlett scored back-to-back goals to open the second and the Mids led 5-1. Freshman Patrick Rooney and senior Ian Raley sandwiched goals around a Billy Zech score and it was 6-3 just 1:53 into the second.

The Mids scored three straight late to push out to a 9-3 lead but a Jason Mihalopoulos goal at 1:17 made it a 9-4 game at the half. The teams went back-and-forth throughout the third quarter and the first half of the fourth and Navy led 12-7. The visitors then strung together three in a row to extend their lead to 15-7 with 2:20 to play. Rooney got his second of the game on a six-on-five at the 1:42-mark, but Alejandro Schmidt Corujo tacked on a late goal to account for the 16-8 final.

Rooney led the Blue Jays with two goals, while Raley (1g, 1a) and freshman Andrew Lee (1g, 1a) added two points each. Lee also drew seven ejections and broke the program's single-season record. He now boasts 80 ejections drawn on the season, besting Matt Fraser's record of 76 (2013). Senior Kyle Pearson made 11 saves and grabbed three steals. Pearson's first save of the game was the 700th of his career.

Hopkins wraps up the regular season next weekend with MAWPC matches at George Washington (November 8) and Navy (November 9).
