Hopkins Finishes Fifth at NCAA Division III Championships

Brotherton Paces Blue Jays in NCAA Championship Debut

TERRE HAUTE, IN – The Johns Hopkins women's cross country team wrapped up its 2024 campaign at the NCAA Division III Championships Saturday morning, finishing fifth in the field of 32 teams with 256 points. The Blue Jays, who won three straight national titles from 2019-2022, make a return to the top five after finishing 12th a season ago.

Carter Brotherton led the way for Hopkins in her National Championship debut, crossing the line in 25th with a time of 21:34.9. The freshman sat in 56th at the midway point in Saturday's 6K, running the 15th fastest split in the field to move up 28 spots from the 3K to 5K marks before climbing three more spots in the final kilometer to take 25th. Brotherton becomes the first freshman to earn All-American status since 2017 for Hopkins and is the program's highest-placing freshman since Hannah Oneda finished 10th in 2012.

Next to cross the line was Cooper Brotherton, whose time of 22:01.9 earned the junior 59th. Brotherton — who finished 128th at the NCAA Championship a season ago — climbed 51 spots from the 1K to 3K marks before gaining six more places by the race's end to sneak into the top 60.

Adriana Catalano was the Blue Jays' next finisher, crossing the line in 73rd with a time of 22:09.8. Making her NCAA Championship debut, the junior sat in 67th at the midway point, dropping eight places between the 3K and 5K marks before using a late kick to regain two spots and finish in the top 75.

Also earning top 100 finishes in a field of nearly 300 competitors were Jamie Stelnik and Sydney Shock, with the duo completing Hopkins' point scorers with their 89th and 90th-place finishes respectively.

In her final race for the Blue Jays, Stelnik spent the majority of the race in the top half of the pack, climbing as high as 81st at the 5K mark before crossing the line in 89th with a time of 22:16.6. Coming in just behind the senior was Shock, who ran in stride with Stelnik for nearly the entire second half of the race en route to finishing 90th with a time of 22:16.9 in her NCAA Championship debut.

Rounding out Hopkins' competitors were Emma Puetz and Triya Roy, with the duo finishing in 126th and 143rd respectively with times of 22:30.7 and 22:36.2.

MIT won its first National Championship in program history with a meet-low 128 points, narrowly beating out UChicago (138) and Williams (155) for the top spot. NYU finished fourth with 177 points followed by the Blue Jays' 256.
