TERRE HAUTE, IN – The Johns Hopkins women's cross country team wrapped up its 2024 campaign at the NCAA Division III Championships Saturday morning, finishing fifth in the field of 32 teams with 256 points. The Blue Jays, who won three straight national titles from 2019-2022, make a return to the top five after finishing 12
th a season ago.
Carter Brotherton led the way for Hopkins in her National Championship debut, crossing the line in 25
th with a time of 21:34.9. The freshman sat in 56
th at the midway point in Saturday's 6K, running the 15
th fastest split in the field to move up 28 spots from the 3K to 5K marks before climbing three more spots in the final kilometer to take 25th. Brotherton becomes the first freshman to earn All-American status since 2017 for Hopkins and is the program's highest-placing freshman since Hannah Oneda finished 10
th in 2012.
Next to cross the line was
Cooper Brotherton, whose time of 22:01.9 earned the junior 59
th. Brotherton — who finished 128
th at the NCAA Championship a season ago — climbed 51 spots from the 1K to 3K marks before gaining six more places by the race's end to sneak into the top 60.
Adriana Catalano was the Blue Jays' next finisher, crossing the line in 73
rd with a time of 22:09.8. Making her NCAA Championship debut, the junior sat in 67
th at the midway point, dropping eight places between the 3K and 5K marks before using a late kick to regain two spots and finish in the top 75.
Also earning top 100 finishes in a field of nearly 300 competitors were
Jamie Stelnik and
Sydney Shock, with the duo completing Hopkins' point scorers with their 89
th and 90
th-place finishes respectively.
In her final race for the Blue Jays, Stelnik spent the majority of the race in the top half of the pack, climbing as high as 81
st at the 5K mark before crossing the line in 89
th with a time of 22:16.6. Coming in just behind the senior was Shock, who ran in stride with Stelnik for nearly the entire second half of the race en route to finishing 90
th with a time of 22:16.9 in her NCAA Championship debut.
Rounding out Hopkins' competitors were
Emma Puetz and
Triya Roy, with the duo finishing in 126
th and 143
rd respectively with times of 22:30.7 and 22:36.2.
MIT won its first National Championship in program history with a meet-low 128 points, narrowly beating out UChicago (138) and Williams (155) for the top spot. NYU finished fourth with 177 points followed by the Blue Jays' 256.
