LOUDONVILLE, NY – The 14
th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team outscored host Siena 11-3 in the second half to pull away for a 17-9 win Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 2-0 while the Saints fall to 0-1 in their season opener.
Coming out of the half tied at six, the Blue Jays wasted little time getting on the board. Senior
Abbey Hurlbrink scored on a rocket off a shot off the dodge less than two minutes in. Grace Dobrzynski answered at the 9:53-mark and the teams were knotted at seven. It was all Blue Jays from then on.
The Blue Jays scored three goals in just one minute and 55 seconds to take a 10-7 lead after three. Sophomore
Ava Angello got things going when she spun on her defender and blew a shot inside the right post from seven yards out. Graduate student
Maeve Barker then buried a free position shot, followed by an Hurlbrink goal off the dodge and just like that it was a three-goal game.
Freshman
Taylor Hoss scored off an
Ashley Mackin feed in the slot just 27 seconds into the fourth for her first career goal. Rebecca Gilhooley answered for Siena with 11:40 to play to make it a three-goal game once again. Senior
Marielle McAteer sparked a six-goal Hopkins' run as the Jays turned that three-goal lead into a nine-goal lead in less than five minutes. Junior
Alayna Costa followed McAteer's strike with an eight-meter goal with 8:36 to play.
Some nice tic-tac-toe passing ended with Mackin on the doorstep just 28 seconds after Costa's goal. Angello then scored a highlight-reel goal when she caught a
Bailey Cheetham pass near her knees and then beat Sabrina Krasner with a behind-the-back shot. Cheetham then found herself on the receiving end of a give-and-go with Angello to put Hopkins up 15-8. Mackin capped the run with a quick-stick shot off a Barker feed at the 4:52-mark. Taryn Asselin had the final say of the game for Siena, scoring just over two minutes later to account for the 17-9 final.
Siena jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game's opening nine minutes before senior
Georgie Gorelick got Hopkins on the board, cashing in off a
Madison Doucette interception on the other end. Mackin then scored the first of her four goals just 22 seconds later and JHU was back within one. Asselin and Kelly Logue sandwiched goals around a score from
Charlotte Smith and the Saints led 5-3 with 13:20 to play in the second.
Barker and Mackin scored back-to-back goals just 62 apart to knot the score at five. Angello then put Hopkins on top for the first time when she took a pass from Smith and dropped her stick to beat Krasner. The lead was short-lived however as Jordan Bentley scored on a left-handed shot to make it a 6-6 game at the half.
Angello tied her career-high with six points (3g, 3a) while Mackin had five points (4g, 1a) and Barker had four (2g, 2a). Hurlbrink (2g, 1a), Hoss (1g, 1a) and Smith (1g, 1) also had multi-point games for the Jays. Freshman
Kayley Kakac had a game-high nine draw controls, two shy of the school record. Graduate student
Kacie Riggs had six draws and Hurlbrink controlled four as the Blue Jays dominated in the circle, 22-7. Senior
Jordan Carr led the defense with four caused turnovers while Doucette added two caused turnovers, four ground balls and four saves.
Logue led the Saints with six points on two goals and four assists. Dobrzynski (1g, 1a), Asselin (2) and Gilhooley (2g) also finished with multiple points for Siena. Krasner totaled nine saves and seven ground balls in the cage.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, February 17 as the Blue Jays visit the Duke Blue Devils. Opening draw at Koskinen Stadium is slated for 3:00 pm.
