Scott Smith has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and junior faceoff specialist
Logan Callahan the Big Ten Specialist of the Week it was announced by the league today. Smith and Callahan helped Johns Hopkins to a pair of victories last week as the Blue Jays topped Towson (13-5) and Georgetown (11-9).
This is the third time in his career that Smith has been honored as the BIG Defensive Player of the Week and the 10
th time a Hopkins player has earned the award since the league added men's lacrosse in 2015. Smith collected 10 ground balls, caused three turnovers and scored his first goal of the season last week. He had a career-high-tying five ground balls in each of the two victories and added his goal in the win against the Tigers. His goal opened the third quarter and ignited a 7-1 game-ending run for the Blue Jays.
In three games this season, Smith has scored the one goal and has 14 ground balls and four caused turnovers to his credit.
Callahan earns B1G Specialist of the Week honors for the second time in his career and his selection marks the 17
th time a Johns Hopkins player has earned the award. Callahan was 28-of-43 (.651) with 19 ground balls in the two victories kast weej. He was 13-of-20 with 10 ground balls in the win against Towson and went 15-of-23 with nine ground balls against Georgetown. The 23 faceoff attempts against the Hoyas were one shy of Callahan's career high.
On the year, Callahan is 40-of-66 (.606) at the X with a. team-high 22 ground balls to his credit.
Johns Hopkins (2-1) will return to action on Saturday, February 17 when the Blue Jays welcome Loyola Maryland to Homewood Field (1 pm).
