PHILADELPHIA, PA – Junior
Ashley Mackin scored a game and career-high seven goals but the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker, 11-10, at 14
th-ranked Penn Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 3-2 on the season, while the Quakers improve to 2-0.
Penn jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the game's opening five minutes. Mackin got things going for the Blue Jays when she scored in transition with 9:51 to go in the quarter. Catherine Berkery answered for the Quakers to put the home team up 4-2. But back-to-back goals from senior
Campbell Case and Mackin less than 90 seconds apart made it a 4-4 game after one.
Erika Chung scored what turned out to be the only goal of the second quarter at the 10:48-mark. Penn then scored the first four goals of the third to push out to a 9-4 lead with 4:15 on the clock. Mackin ended the Quaker run when she got open on goal line extended, took a pass from senior
Abbey Hurlbrink, and scored from in-tight. Junior
Charlotte Smith then dodged right down the middle of the fan and beat Kelly Van Hoesen with a bouncer at 1:57. Just 73 seconds later, the lead was down to two. Sophomore
Ava Angello found Mackin on the back-door for the quick-stick score.
The Quakers responded with a pair of goals in a 62-second span early in the fourth to go up 11-7. But the Blue Jays weren't going away. Mackin scored on a behind-the-back shot off a
Maeve Barker feed at 8:20. Just over two minutes later, a
Reagan O'Brien takeaway led to a transition goal for Mackin and it was a two-goal game with 6:06 on the clock. After both teams traded defensive stops, Hopkins had one more chance. Mackin forced a turnover on a Penn clear and scored from the doorstep with four seconds to play. Penn won the ensuing draw however and held on for the win.
Mackin's seven goal are the most in a game since Maggie Schneidereith scored seven at Michigan on April 24, 2021. The seven goals are also one shy of the school record.
Angello was the only other Blue Jay with multiple points as she finished with three points (1g, 2a) and scored the 50
th goal of her career. Graduate student
Madison Doucette made 14 saves and picked up three ground balls. O'Brien had three caused turnovers and three ground balls for the defense. Chung led the Quakers with five points (2g, 3a) while Niki Miles and Berkery scored four goals each. Van Hoesen finished with eight saves in the win.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, February 28 as the Blue Jays host the Georgetown Hoyas. Opening draw at Homewood Field is slated for 4:00 pm.
