EVANSTON, IL – Host and top-ranked Northwestern jumped out to a six-goal lead and went on to beat 12
th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 14-9, on Saturday afternoon. The loss snaps the Blue Jays' four-game win streak as they fall to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in the Big Ten. The Wildcats win their seventh straight as they improve to 8-1 and 1-0 in the B1G.
Izzy Scane (four goals) and Madison Taylor (two) combined for all six goals in the Wildcats' game-opening run.
Ava Angello got the Blue Jays on the board with 1:55 to play in the first as they capitalized on a failed clear.
Campbell Case forced the turnover at the restraining line, Angello scooped up the ball and went in for the score.
Angello's goal sparked a 5-2 run that bridged the quarter break.
Marielle McAteer scored just 29 seconds into the second when she took a pass from
Maeve Barker and scored on a left-handed rip. Angello then got her second of the afternoon when she dodged through the entire defense and scored from the doorstep at 9:33. Erin Coykendall got one back for the Wildcats with a free position goal at 8:14 to make it 7-3. Case and
Charlotte Smith then sandwiched scores around a strike from Abby LoCasio and it was 8-5 Wildcats at the half.
Northwestern got goals from Scane and Taylor in the third quarter and the 'Cats led 10-5 heading into the fourth. Scane and Coykendall scored back-ot-back goals to open the fourth and push the lead to seven with 10:41 to play.
Hopkins ended the four-goal spurt with an Angello goal at 9:39. Some nice tic-tac-toe passing ended with Case finding Ava on the doorstep, she hitched and then beat Molly Laliberty to the near post. Taylor answered for Northwestern just 27 seconds later and it was 13-6.
Bailey Cheetham came right back for the Blue Jays when she dodged from behind, spun on her defender and scored from in tight to make it a six-goal game.
Scane pushed the lead back to seven at the 6:20-mark with her seventh of the afternoon. The Blue Jays answered with back-to-back goals to make it 14-9 with 3:49 to go. After a
Madison Doucette save, McAteer scored on a give-and-go with Cheetham at 5:44. Less than two minutes later, Barker dodged through the Wildcat defense and scored on a shot to the bottom right corner. As it turned out that was the final goal of the game as NU took the 14-9 win.
Angello led the Blue Jays with a hat trick while Case added three points (1g, 2a). Cheetham (1g, 1a), McAteer (2g) and Barker (1g, 1a) also had multi-point games for the Blue Jays.
Jordan Carr had two caused turnovers, to go with two ground balls and five draw controls. Doucette finished with 10 saves and five ground balls. Scane (7g, 1a) and Madison (4g, 3a) led the Wildcats while Laliberty made 10 saves in the cage.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 23 as the Blue Jays host the Ohio State Buckeyes. Opening draw at Homewood Field is slated for 1:00 pm.
