Campbell Case and
Ashley Mackin combined for 10 points to lead 10
th-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 15-5 win over Ohio State in Big Ten action Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 8-3 overall and even their B1G record at 1-1, while the Buckeyes fall to 6-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Hopkins jumped on Ohio State early scoring four goals in less than three minutes early in the first.
Bailey Cheetham got things going for the Blue Jays, scoring on a left-handed shot at the 11:45-mark. Just 41 second later, Mackin scored from the doorstep off a feed from Case. Case then scored back-to-back goals in a 51-second span, including a behind-the-back from the right alley, to put JHU up 4-0.
Kate Tyack ended the run with a goal for the Buckeyes at 6:55 in the first. The Blue Jays responded with two goals in 25 seconds to take a 6-1 lead into the quarter break. Case completed her first quarter hat trick after a
Maeve Barker takeaway on the ride led to Case going in on all alone on an open net.
Ava Angello then scored a behind-the-back goal on the doorstep.
Marielle McAteer pushed the lead to six at the 9:00-mark in the second, scoring from the left alley over her defender. Jamie Lasda answered with a transition goal with 4:24 to pull Ohio State back within five.
Hopkins answered with a transition goal of its own as Barker drew a double team and then found Cheetham open on the crease. That put JHU up 8-2 at the half and sparked a six-goal run that saw the Blue Jays' lead grow to 13-2 with 4:59 left in the third. Six different Blue Jays scored during the run. Lasda once again halted the run, with another goal off the clear and it was 13-3 with 2:57 left in the third.
Angello pushed the lead back to 11 with a woman up goal, going high-to-low off a McAteer feed with just 19 ticks left in the third. Mackin capped the scoring for the Blue Jays when she cut across the fan, took a pass from Cheetham and picked the left post with 11:36 to play. The Buckeyes got goals from Kampbell Stone and Annie Hargraves in the final 10 minutes to account for the 15-5 final.
Case tied her career high with four goals and five points, to go with three ground balls. Mackin notched a hat trick and handed out a pair of assists. Cheetham added four points (2g, 2a) while McAteer (2g, 1a), Angello (3g) and Barker (3a) had three points each.
Jordan Carr led the defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Hannah Johnson and
Reagan O'Brien had three takeaways each and
Abbey Hurlbrink had a game-high six ground balls.
Jennifer Barry had a game-high eight draws and
Madison Doucette made five saves.
Lasda led the Buckeyes with two goals while Hargraves added two points (1g, 1a). Lasda also controlled four draws. Regan Alexander finished with seven saves to go with four caused turnovers and five ground balls.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 30 when the Blue Jays host sixth-ranked James Madison. Opening draw at Homewood Field is slated for 5:00 pm.
