ATLANTA. GA – In a rematch of the ITA National Indoor Championship Quarterfinals, seventh-ranked Emory beat eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins, 7-2, Friday in Atlanta. The Blue Jays slip to 8-4 on the season while the Eagles improve to 7-4.
Emory took a 2-1 lead after doubles and then won five of the six singles matches to secure the win. Yanire Marte and Izzy Antanavicius picked up the first point of the match with an 8-1 win over
Samantha Wang and
Ashley Chang at number three doubles.
Jay Xiao and
Sophia Kim then tied the match when they beat Emily Kantrovitz and Ana Cristina Perez, 8-3, at one. The Eagles retook the lead as Iris Berman and Eliza McPherron won 8-4 at two over
Sydney Langer and
Kamila Wong.
Kantrovitz pushed Emory's lead to 3-1 when she beat
Mary Beth Hurley 6-4-6-1 at number one singles. Antanavicius followed with a close 6-4, 7-5 win over Langer at four. Perez clinched the win for the Eagles with a 6-2, 7-6 (1) win at two over Chang. Ilayda Baykan came from behind to win 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 at three over Kim. Wang picked up a point for the Blue Jays when she rallied to beat Berman 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7) at five. Marte closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over
Lia Melvin at six.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 30 at Towson. The non-conference match is slated for a 1:00 pm start.
