Jacob Angelus has been named the Big Ten Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week and freshman defenseman
Quintan Kilrain the Big Ten Men's Lacrosse Freshman of the Week it was announced by the league today. Angelus and Kilrain helped Johns Hopkins to a 13-8 victory at Rutgers on Sunday in the league opener for both teams.
This is the third time in his career that Angelus has been honored as the BIG Offensive Player of the Week and the 20
th time a Hopkins player has earned the award since the league added men's lacrosse in 2015. Angelus led the way offensively for the Blue Jays in their win against the Scarlet Knights as he scored three goals and added five assists for eight points. The three goals and eight points both tied his career high and his five assists were one shy of his personal best.
In nine games this season, Angelus leads the Blue Jays in assists (24) and points (40) and ranks second in goals (16). His efforts thus far in 2024 have pushed his career totals to 67 goals and 105 assists for 172 points. Angelus is tied for sixth in school history in assists, ranks 18
th in points and is one of just six players in school history with more than 60 goals and 100 assists.
Kilrain earns B1G Freshman of the Week honors for the first time in his career and his selection marks the 22nd time a Johns Hopkins player has earned the award. Kilrain grabbed four ground balls in the win over the Scarlet Knights and fueled a defense that held Rutgers more than four goals under its season scoring average. In addition, Kilrain and the Blue Jay defense held the 'Knights scoreless for stretches of 23:13 and 14:16 and killed off both of Rutgers' extra-man opportunities.
Kilrain is the only freshman in the Blue Jay starting lineup as he's played in all nine games and has started the last five on close defense. He counts one assist, 21 ground balls and five caused turnovers to his credit on the year with his 21 ground balls currently tied for third on the team.
Johns Hopkins (6-3, 1-0 B1G) will return to action on Saturday, March 30 when the Blue Jays welcome Michigan (6-3, 1-0 B1G) to Homewood Field (12 pm / ESPN2).
