Johns Hopkins Shuts Out Third-Ranked Washington & Lee, 2-0

LEXINGTON, VA – The 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team opened the season with a big win as the Blue Jays shutout host and third-ranked Washington & Lee, 2-0, Friday afternoon. Hopkins opens the season with a win for the third time in the last fifth time in the last seven seasons.

After a back-and-forth affair in which the two goalies combined for five saves, Hopkins jumped on the home team early in the second. In fact, the Blue Jays needed just 77 seconds to get on the board after the halftime break. A good challenge at midfield by graduate student Francis Meyer sprung the Blue Jays. He carried up field before passing to graduate student Jack Mendrysa at the top of the box. Mendrysa one-timed the ball back across the box to senior Will Sangpachatanaruk, who poked it under a diving Will Joseph.

Hopkins added an insurance goal in the 59th minute off the foot of junior Scotty Coleman. Sangpachatanaruk dribbled into the right side of the Generals' box and crossed the ball to Coleman on the opposite side. He ran on to the ball and blasted a shot to the back post in the 59th minute.

The Blue Jay defense and graduate student Loucas Costeas made the shutout stand, holding the Generals to just five shots over the final 31 minutes. Costeas finished with five saves to earn his first shutout in the Hopkins Blue & Black. Joseph made three saves in the loss for Washington & Lee.

Hopkins is back in action on Sunday, September 1 as the Blue Jays host the Sewanee Tigers. The home opener is scheduled for an 11:00 am start at Homewood Field.

Notes: The Blue Jays beat a top-five team for the first time since September 22, 2021 • JHU beat host and third-ranked St. Mary's, 3-2, on that date • Hopkins is 4-2-1 in its last seven games against top-five opponents.
