Johns Hopkins Blanks Sewanee, 2-0, in Home Opener

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins used a pair of second-half goals to shutout visiting Sewanee on Sunday in the Blue Jays' home opener. Hopkins improves to 2-0-0 on the season while the Tigers slip to 0-2-0.

Hopkins had a trio of great chances in the first half, the first coming in the 18th minute when senior Ian Whamond made a great run through the defense, but Sewanee goalie Nathan Vanhoeve was able to snuff out the scoring chance. Just over five minutes later, a Will Sangpachatanaruk volley just missed the upper left corner. In the 44th minute, Vanhoeve barely got a glove on a header from sophomore Jacob Sardinha.

The Blue Jays broke through in the 55th minute with a goal from freshman Rishi Pathak. Sangpachatanaruk crossed the ball into the box from the endline and graduate student Jack Mendrysa turned and fired, but it was blocked. The ball rebounded out to Pathak, who blasted a left-footed shot into the top of the net for his first career score.

Mendrysa then got his first goal in a Blue Jay uniform and doubled JHU's lead in the 86th minute. Junior Javi Ordonez split a pair of defenders with a ball to Sangpachatanaruk, who then centered the ball into the box. Mendrysa was there on the backside and one-timed the ball past the outstretched hands of Vanhoeve.

Hopkins outshot Sewanee, 17-3, and had a 5-1 advantage in corners. Graduate student Loucas Costeas earned his second straight shutout without making a save. Vanhoeve finished with four saves in the loss for the Tigers.

Hopkins returns to action on Friday, September 6 when Kenyon visits Homewood Field. The non-conference contest is set for a 7:00 pm start.
