BALTIMORE, MD – Senior
Jonathan Cui scored the game's only goal in the 51
st minute to lead Johns Hopkins to a 1-0 win at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 4-2-0 overall while the host Scarlet Raiders fall to 4-3-0.
After a scoreless first half in which the Blue Jays outshot the home team, 6-2, they needed just over five minutes in the second to get on the board. After a scramble in the Rutgers-Newark box, the ball kicked out to graduate student
Francis Meyer. He one-timed the ball right back into Cui, who had slipped behind his defender. Cui took one to settle the ball and then chipped it over Scarlet Raiders goalie Pedro Flores.
Hopkins finished with an 18-7 advantage in shots while corners were even at four apiece. Graduate student
Loucas Costeas was not forced to make a save in the shutout for the Blue Jays. Flores finished with seven saves for the Scarlet Raiders.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, September 20 as the Blue Jays open Centennial Conference play. JHU travels to Muhlenberg for a 7:00 pm start.
