BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins beat visiting Ursinus, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon to grab its first Centennial Conference (CC) win of the season. The Blue Jays improve to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference, while the Bears fall to 6-2-2 and 0-2-0 in the CC.
Graduate student
Francis Meyer put the Blue Jays on the board in the just 18
th minute with a penalty kick goal. He set the play up with a great through ball to senior
Jonathan Cui, who was taken down near the Bears' goal. For the second straight game, Meyer took the kick and buried it for his third goal of the season.
Hopkins pushed its lead to two just before the half off with sophomore
Christian Clarke's first goal of the season in the 43
rd minute. Sophomore
CJ Feldman played the ball over the defense to classmate
Turner Orvin, who then crossed the ball into the box. Clarke ran to the near post and redirected the ball just inside the post with his left foot.
Another great passing combination led to the Blue Jays' third goal in the 57
th minute. Junior
Will Andrus threw a long ball to Cui, who flicked it around a Bears' defender and along the right side of the box. Meyer ran onto the ball and centered it to senior
Will Sangpachatanaruk, who took one touch and then blasted a shot just under the crossbar.
The Bears, who came into the game averaging more than 3.60 goals per game, weren't going away. About 48 yards from goal, Alexander Woll took a free kick for Ursinus and sent the ball to the right side of the Hopkins' box. Luke Luehrs headed across the box where Marco Balic volleyed it inside the left post in the 75
th minute.
Both teams finished with eight shots while Hopkins had an 8-3 advantage in corners. Graduate student
Loucas Costeas finished with a pair of saves before giving way to sophomore
Simon Turner in the 69
th minute. Zack Matik made one save for the Bears before being replaced by Josiah Moore, also in the 69
th minute.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 2 against McDaniel. The Centennial Conference contest is slated for a 4:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
