Second-Half Surge Powers Hopkins Past Ursinus, 6-0

Blue Jays Score Six After Halftime in CC Victory

BALTIMORE, MD – The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team scored six second-half goals and the Blue Jay defense recorded its fourth clean sheet of the season as the Blue Jays topped visiting Ursinus, 6-0, at Homewood Field Saturday evening.  The Blue Jays run their unbeaten streak to eight and improve to 5-1-3 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference with the victory, while the Bears dropped their third straight and slip to 5-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial.

After firing 11 first-half shots without finding the back of the net, the Blue Jays broke through in the 50th minute to grab a one-goal lead.  Sophomore Ava Venuti's long cross from the wing found the foot of a streaking Katia Chiampas, who poked it past the outstretched arms of Ursinus goalie Alyssa Marraffino to get the Blue Jays on the board.

The Blue Jays doubled their lead just over eight minutes later.  Junior Megha Salvi sprung senior Katie Sullivan along the top of the box and Sullivan pulled the trigger on the run and stuck one inside the near post for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The two-goal lead held for just under 12 minutes before the Blue Jays exploded for three goals in a six-minute span to turn the 2-0 lead into a 5-0 advantage.  Freshman Carolyn Johnson scored off a set piece that started with a long serve from Olivia Redden into the box with just under 21 minutes to play; Johnson then assisted on back-to-back Jessica Camken goals in a four-minute span a short time later to fuel the three-goal spurt that put the game away.

Chiampas put the finishing touches on the victory with her second goal of the game in the 89th minute off a nifty cross through the box from Sullivan.

While the Blue Jay offense was taking control at one end, the Blue Jay defense limited the second-highest scoring offense in the Centennial Conference entering the game to just three shots.  All three were on target, but senior Allyson Shick saved each to record the shutout.

The Blue Jays had no fewer than six golden chances to score in the first 20 minutes of the game with five of those coming in a six-minute span, but they couldn't solve Marraffino early. Marraffino twice robbed Chiampas on diving saves, while a pair of offerings from Sullivan and one each from Olivia Piraino and Camken whistled just off target to keep the game scoreless.

Marraffino posted eight saves – four in each half – and held the Jays scoreless until Chiampas broke through shortly after halftime to ignite the second-half explosion.

Notes:  Sullivan's goal was the 47th of her career, which moves her into sole possession of fourth place on JHU's career goal-scoring chart.  She also moved into sole possession of third place on JHU's career points list (123).  The six goals are a season-high and the most Johns Hopkins has scored in a half since the Blue Jays scored seven times in the first half of an 11-0 win over Roanoke on September 4, 2022.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 5 when the Blue Jays travel to Bryn Mawr to take on the Owls in another Centennial Conference game (1 pm).
